Summary of the profile
The common thread of the research carried out within the discipline is the concept of sustainable mutation declined in the different years and fields (rural, industrial, social, methodological) both through the transformation of the existing heritage and in the definition of new projects and methodologies, with reference constant to the results of the disciplinary researches of the last fifty years, in which reading, theory and project are dialectically related, feeding on mutual references, typical of the history of Italian architecture and its peculiarities.
The academic excursus of thought, research and methodology over the years assumes as its own some historical and contemporary concepts, hybridizing them, reinterpreting them through tools derived from the characteristics of the disciplinary studies of the recent past and their reinterpretations. A dialectic combination, that between history and rereading of the present, constant prerogative of Italian architects, which I recall in the researches and projects of my disciplinary path.
The idea that strongly orientates my studies is that of an architecture capable of questioning itself with respect to its fundamental elements and its relationship with the city and the community that inhabits the places of the built and tries to relate them through an assembly path that it includes the memory and the complex social problems of our time, and derives, in part, from an interpretation of the typological classification system as an evolutionary and dynamic principle applied to spaces and situations today of "waste", in part from adaptive logics for use of a structure that changes and is configured according to the conditions of the context.
Specifically this idea of architecture and the constant presence of the concept of sustainable mutation, has been articulated and evolved as a thought and outcome in my research, declined in specific areas that summarize as follows:
From the second half of the nineties I take care of the territory of the scattered houses of the great plain. Resuming the studies made by the Stems and the Ortolani, through a type-morphological reading of the buildings and the courts, I come to a more accurate definition of the typologies present in the territory, and in particular the research focuses on the Delta area where collaboration of Delta 2000, prepares a study of cataloging all the rural assets present in the area, and prepares design guidelines for their mutation according to their own reinterpreted characters.
Beginning in the two thousand years the research focuses on the recovery of abandoned assets, with particular interest in the areas of sugar refineries, large abandoned factories that the delocalization of agricultural production has left as giant cathedrals in the desert, frequent in the territory of the great plain. First of all, a survey and mapping of the pre-existing areas and their classification was carried out, to then identify the design mutation methodologies of the same.
The interest in social housing has been the focus of studies since 2000. First of all in the search for the relationship between the forms of living and the architectural project, then on the possible and different project scenarios for social housing in its multiple declinations. Social housing is interpreted through a new system of constantly changing living spaces and a design / construction implementation of buildings. The research of the period converges into a series of projects for social housing based on the mutation, temporality and sustainability of the design, economic and construction process.
From the second decade of the 2000s, research is oriented towards a new declination of the project's sustainability according to the changed socio-economic scenario of the city.
The new forms of contemporary living are investigated, the suggestions of economic and social disciplines (the concept of circularity and conditioning) declined in an architectural thought that, with respect to the historicity and typical Italian architecture, initiates possible contaminations and introduces the variable of sustainable contemporaneity : the Community / Community.
The research and the design implications define a system of hybrid, circular architecture project in which the re-conditioning is the strategy, capable of requalifying not only the abandoned containers and spaces of the city, but links, relationships with applicative, evolutionary and adaptive tools. of the discipline.

• Alessandro Gaiani was born in Bologna on 1 March 1963.

In particular, he stayed in the Netherlands, whose experience is documented with the essay The Dutch experience, renew with tradition, within the volume, AA.VV., "Designing in the urban fabric", 1993, where project paths are exposed of experiences taken as case studies for the design of already consolidated urban fabrics; and in Paris, whose experience was used for the drafting of the Garages and Libraries chapters within the "Building Design Manual" of the book publishing house Ulrico Hoepli, 1992;
• Has acquired a good knowledge of the IT tool for planning and research purposes both in the university and in the professional field.
The activity then developed also in the study of the expressive modes of representation with particular reference to automatic image processing techniques, multimedia and hypermedia systems.
From the mid-nineties he took care of the cultural heritage of the rural houses of the Emilia Romagna plain, first with a work of surveying and cataloging later with publication on their possible transformation
Since 1999, residential construction has become the subject of research on which public funding has received PRIN and local FAR. In particular, the research focused on a new system of systemic design process based on open and continuously evolving mechanisms.
Since 1999 he has been a member of the research center ARCDES (Architectural Design), Department of Architecture, Ferrara, where he develops research, publications, training in the field of architectural design
She has been organizing study trips for students and architects in Europe since 2002.
Since 2007 he is a member of the PhD in "architecture technology" and was tutor of a thesis discussed in the XXII cycle entitled "the sustainability of public space in residential construction - paradigm towards environmental process innovation" discussed in March 2011

The architecture students of Ferrara visiting the Macrolotto Zero
Professor Gaiani: "An area that undoubtedly has its own cultural, architectural and social identity from which to eliminate the incongruous elements to create regeneration mechanisms on the urban area." This morning about 100 students of the University of Ferrara found themselves in the square delle Carceri, led by the professor of the architectural department Marcello Marchesini and the head of the courses Alessandro Gaiani, to visit the historic center of the city and make an inspection of the Macrolotto zero. "The area we visited - said Professor Gaiani - without a doubt its cultural, architectural and social identity. Certainly presents difficulties, for example we have noticed that there are no public spaces or connection and this will be the basis from which the children will start in the realization of their projects. Our idea is to eliminate the incongruous elements found there to create regeneration mechanisms on the urban area. "Since September, at the beginning of the school year, the design courses for the third year of the architecture department of University of Ferrara are focused on Prato and in particular on the Macrolotto zero with the birth of specific ideas and projects.
