Curriculum

Alessandro Gaiani, architect, is Associate Professor in Architectural Design at the Department of Architecture, University of Ferrara, where he conducts research based on the strategic-ecosystemic approach to architectural design. His research interest is oriented on how to intervene on disused existing heritage and on the relationship with communities. The concept of sustainable mutation is declined in the different years and areas (rural, industrial, social housing, methodological) from the transformations of the existing heritage (first disused and then in regeneration) to the definition of new projects and methodologies, with constant reference to the results of disciplinary research over the last fifty years, in which reading, theory and design relate dialectically, feeding on reciprocal cross-references, typical of the history of Italian architecture and its peculiarities. He has carried out PRIN research of national and local interest. He has carried out research for public administrations and national and international research organizations.  He is a member of the Academic Board of the International PhD Architecture and Urban Planning IDAUP. He is a member of the editorial board of the magazine Anfione Zeto, where he edits the N.E.W.S. column, and author and editor of books, essays, articles, and member of the Scientific Society ‘Proarch’. Visiting Professor within the Erasmus + International Credit Mobility (ICM) exchange program (Action KA107 - Mobility to Non-European Partner Countries) Agreement no. 2019-1-IT02-KA107-061336 at the University of Sarajevo. He is an advocate of complex thinking and the consequent value of connection and contamination between different disciplines and architecture. He was co-curator of the Italian Pavilion at the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale. He has won and placed in national and international design competitions. For Quodlibet, he has recently published the books Sovrascritture Urbane and The Project of the Real.
