Presentation
Marco Peresani is Full Professor at the Department of Humanities, Unit of Prehistory and Anthropology Sciences, the University of Ferrara. Since 1993 he designs and coordinates research projects focused on the human populations in Mediterranean Europe, particularly the north of Italy, the Alps and the Adriatic Basin. Specifically, his investigations focus on Neanderthal cultures and behavior, Neanderthal – Homo sapiens bio-cultural substitution, Last Glacial Maximum and the colonization of mountain ranges during the Late Glacial and Early Holocene. As a geoarcheologist, he also contributes to reconstructing depositional and post-depositional processes at cave and open-air sites. Using lithic technology as primary research tool, he reconstructs hunter-gatherers’ settlement dynamics and reveals the existence of behavioural variability across the Middle Palaeolithic, the transition to the Upper Palaeolithic, the Gravettian and the Epigravettian until the Early mesolithic. He conducts fieldwork at many sites in the Italian Alps and the Apennines, among which primarily Grotta di Fumane with its remarkable cultural sequence. He conducts archaeological missions in Albania and collaborates with research teams in China, Romania, France, Spain, Germany and other countries. His publication list includes edited books and over 400 papers published as articles in peer-review journals, chapters in volumes and conference proceedings.
