CURRICULUM VITAE THEO ZAFFAGNINI
Theo Zaffagnini graduated cum laude in 1993 from the Faculty of Architecture, University of Florence.
In the academic year 1993/1994, he was declared lecturer in Architectural Technology at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Ferrara.
From 1995 to 1999 he attended the PhD in Architectural Technology (10th cycle) at the Department of Building Production Processes and Methods (DPMPE) of the University of Florence.
In 1999 he was awarded a PhD / Ph.D. in Architectural Technology.
In November 1999, he was called as University Researcher at the Faculty of Architecture in Ferrara following his participation in a competition announced by the same University for this role.
In September 2013, he was awarded the National Scientific Qualification (ASN 2012) in the Competitive Sector 08/C1 for the position of Professor II Fascia.
Since December 2014, he has been called as Associate Professor of Technological Design of Architecture at the Department of Architecture, University of Ferrara.
Here he conducts research in the field of technological innovation (sustainable technologies for architecture), the recovery and reuse of historical building heritage, energy efficiency of buildings and design issues related to the Smart City.
In June 2023, he was awarded the National Scientific Appointment (ASN 2021-2023) in the Competitive Sector 08/C1 Design and Technological Design of Architecture for the position of professor of the first rank. [CEAR-08/C].
Teaching activities
Lectureships in Master's and Bachelor's degree courses
Since 2005 to date he has been Lecturer of the characterising subject of "Architectural Technology" in the Laboratory of Architectural Construction I (second year) in the 5-year Single-Cycle Degree Course in Architecture (Degree Class LM-4 ; to date Course Credits: 7/11 Lab).
As part of the activities of the Laboratory of Architectural Construction I organises (in collaboration) more than 20 editions of the Architecture Prize "Building with Wood Systems" and related exhibitions. Access reserved for students of LCA1 courses and exhibition open to the public.
He is the supervisor or co-rapporteur of several degree theses in Architecture on technological topics both at the Faculty/Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara and at the IUAV University of Venice and the Polytechnic University of Milan.
In 2011-2012, a thesis co-authored with Dr. Mauro Ferraresi (IULM Milan) [co-rapporteurs: Dr. L. Gabrielli (UniFe) with Antonella Prisco and Francesco Tonucci (CNR Rome)] discussed at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Ferrara and entitled "ABC: architectural Basis for Communication" by students Giovanni Oliva and Serena Maioli was presented as a Social Innovation project with the title "COM.bus: technology and research at the service of the citizen" and was selected within a European funding programme of the 2007-2013 seven-year period "Smart Cities and Communities and Social Innovation", which was then acknowledged by the MIUR.
G. Oliva and S. Maioli's project was financed to the tune of € 499,700.00 and saw the collaboration of the Departments of Architecture and Humanistic Studies of the University of Ferrara, the Municipality of Ferrara, the ISTC (Institute of Science and Technology of Cognition) of the CNR in Rome and a number of private companies (operating in national and international spheres).
From A.A. 2017/2018 to date, he has been lecturer of the integrated module of "Materials and Production" within the Basic Design Laboratory of the Degree Course in Industrial Product Design (Degree Class: L-4 ; Training Credits: 6/13 Lab).
Lectureships and postgraduate activities (Masters, Schools of Higher Education and PhD Course Coordination)
He carries out a conspicuous activity within the framework of third-level training courses (national and international PhD), both at institutional management and coordination support level and as a lecturer, and this with continuity from the 2000s to the present.
In particular:
From 2000 to 2016 he was a member of the teaching board of the PhD courses in "Architecture Technology" (cycles XV to XXVIII). Doctorate in consortium between FAF-IUAV- Unibo /DAPT Cesena - LUB Bolzano and RomaTre.
He is a lecturer in the 2006 and 2007 editions of the postgraduate training course 'Architecture- Energy' organised by the Faculty of Architecture in Ferrara.
From 2006 to 2011 he is Vice-Coordinator of the Doctorate Course in Architectural Technology (Coordinator Prof. Graziano Trippa).
From 2012 to 2016, he was confirmed as Deputy Coordinator of the Doctorate Course in Architectural Technology (Coordinator Prof. Roberto Di Giulio).
In 2011, he coordinated and lectured for the PhD in a seminar entitled 'Sustainability in Architecture' for the University of Ferrara's Institute for Advanced Studies Ferrara 1391 (IUSS).
In 2013, with Prof. R. Di Giulio and the collaboration of Prof. A. Stella, he planned the establishment of the first international doctoral course at the Department of Architecture in Ferrara, which took the name International Doctorate Architecture and Urban Planning (IDAUP).
It is a Joint PhD Programme in Consortium (and Association) with Foreign Universities.
The Programme is based on a Consortium Agreement with the Polis University of Tirana (ALB) and has had the University of Malta/Faculty for the built environment, the Slovak University of Technology STUBA in Bratislava/ Institute of Management (SLK), the University of Pècs (HUN) and since 2017 the University do Minho in Guimaraes (POR) as IDAUP Associate Members.
IDAUP is first accredited in 2013 for the XXIX cycle, then all subsequent cycles until the XXXVIII are accredited by both MIUR/ANVUR and the Public Agency for the Accreditation of Higher Education in Albania (2015, 2023).
From 2013 to October 2024 he is appointed by the IDAUP Coordinator and Academic Board , PhD Programme Supervisor and Deputy Coordinator with IDAUP delegation for the Department of Architecture (DA).
The administrative headquarters of the course is in fact the University of Ferrara/DA.
Since 1 November 2024, he is the Coordinator of the International Doctorate in Architecture and Urban Planning (IDAUP).
From 2013 to the present day, he has been responsible for the design/structuring and constant implementation of the content of the IDAUP postgraduate training section (for which he is responsible) on the website of the DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE (DA).
Since 2000 he has supervised as Tutor/Supervisor or Co-supervisor about 25 PhD students/theses (often also following foreign PhD students), some of which have been awarded as excellence theses in their cycle (Dr. Modugno V., 2009 Premio IUSS Migliore Tesi) and two awarded the international 'Nicolò Copernico' Acknowledgement for innovative doctoral theses in science and technology in the framework of the Giulio Natta and Nicolò Copernico Prizes, Ferrara (Dr. Habibi S. Ph.D., 2016 - Doctorate in Architectural Technology and Dr. Pracucci A., Ph.D., 2018, Doctorate IDAUP).
From 2006 - 2013 he is the office contact person on behalf of the PhD Course Coordinator (with delegated authority) for relations with the OSDOTTA Inter-university Network of National PhDs in Architectural Technology.
He is a lecturer in the 1st Level Master's Degree Course in "Site Management and Construction Supervision" in the years 2015 and 2016 at the Department of Engineering, University of Ferrara. (Dir. Resp. Prof. Ing. M. Biolcati Rinaldi).
He has been a lecturer in the 2nd Level Master's degree MICmaster - Innovation Management and Communities, matching real and digital cities (Coordinator Prof. G. Lelli) since the 2021 edition. Master in collaboration with Smart City 4.0 Sustainable LAB, Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK), Raise>up srl and Clust-ER BUILT Building and Construction.
In June 2023 he lectured at the Advanced Training Course 2023 "Designing urban regeneration around the nodes of sustainable mobility and autonomous driving" of the University of Parma (Scientific Responsible Prof. Dario Costi) with RER, Lepida, UniBo, UniMoRe, Architects Federations, etc. with speeches on the topic "Minor Centres and Territorial Networks". THE CITY SCHOOL - EXPERIMENTING THE CITY OF PEOPLE 4.0 - The Sustainable Urban Project of Autonomous Mobility and Smart Grid in Emilia-Romagna.
Participation in scientific committees, membership of scientific societies and participation in juries for competitions and awards.
Since March 2002 and for the whole of 2003, Theo Zaffagnini has been a member of the Scientific Committee together with Prof. Graziano Trippa, Prof. Alfonso Acocella and Arch. Gabriele Lelli, and has organised (in collaboration) the events (Conferences, Presentations, Debates, etc.) relating to the first Decennial of the Foundation of the Faculty of Architecture of Ferrara (Xfaf).), relating to the first Decennial of the Foundation of the Faculty of Architecture of Ferrara (Xfaf) entitled "DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION IN ARCHITECTURE", which foresees the participation of numerous internationally renowned speakers and designers in the debates planned and the awarding of Honorary Degrees.
For this project, it is also in charge of fundraising for the implementation of the initiative.
He co-authored the concept for the dedicated www.Xfaf.it website created for the 10th anniversary. ORGANISING AND SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE and authors of the DECADE'S SCIENTIFIC PLAN: Graziano Trippa (Headmaster), Alfonso Acocella (Xfaf General Co-ordinator), Gabriele Lelli and Theo ZAFFAGNINI.
He took part in the OSDOTTA Scientific Committees from 2008 to 2013. Subsequently in 2015 to the DOTTA International Scientific Committee of the OSDOTTA network (OSDOT2.0 XI Edition).
In 2011 he was active in the organisation of the events of the twentieth anniversary XfafX Festival To design Today of the Faculty of Architecture of Ferrara, an event opened in Palazzo Tassoni Estense - Ferrara 2 May 2011 with the Scientific Coordination of Prof. Alfonso Acocella. Theo Zaffagnini (in collaboration) is part of the scientific committee and organiser and is also a speaker at the conference entitled: "Mario Zaffagnini: a school of architecture based on human needs".
In March 2012, he was the scientific curator with Prof. Andrea Rinaldi of the XfafX Conference entitled "Mario Zaffagnini, a school of architecture based on the needs of man" in which, in addition to being the creator with Rinaldi himself, he was also one of the speakers at the Department of Architecture in Ferrara.
He has been a member of the Italian Society of Architectural Technology (SITdA) continuously since its establishment.
Since the end of March 2024, as part of the activities of the Architecture Technology Society SITdA, he has been appointed as Delegate for 'Internationalisation' for the three-year period 2023-2026.
Since 2015 to date, he has been a member of the MD_Next City Lab Research Group/Network (Head Prof. Gabriele Lelli).
In 2019 he is invited as a jury member of the 13th edition of the "International Award for Sustainable Architecture" Fassa Bortolo together with Jury President Prof. Emeritus (TUM) Thomas Herzog, Prof. Arch. From 2000 to the present day, he has collaborated in the activities of the Laboratory of Building Maintenance and Management and the Environment (LEM) of the Department of Architecture in Ferrara (Respp. Prof. R. Di Giulio and Prof. S. Mazzacane), then the Laboratory of Technology (LEM) (Responsible Prof. R. Di Giulio)
Since its establishment in 2007, he is a member of the Interdepartmental Centre Architecture_Energy (Centre A>E) of the Faculty of Architecture in Ferrara.
Since 2007, he has been a member of the Material Design (MD) Research Laboratory, where he pours his work into the Post-it section, the Annals and collaborates as a Refeee Peer Review for the MD Journal in Open Access (2017).
From 2010-2013 and subsequently from 2015 to the present day, it is part of the TekneHub Laboratory of the Technopole of the University of Ferrara, which is part of the High Technology Network of the Emilia Romagna Region.

He participates in numerous national and international conferences and symposia (also by invitation) as a speaker, scientific coordinator, organiser, chairman and/or discussant.
He is active in numerous International Workshops and Seminars both as a member of Scientific and Organising Committees and as a lecturer and speaker (e.g. SAIE/Bologna, MADE/Milan, activities organised by SITdA, etc.).
In 2004, he was curator (with Arch. Gaia Magoni) of the exhibition "Quando l'Ateneo è citta" at the Rector's Office of the University of Ferrara and author of an essay in the volume of the same name - predominantly photographic - R. Scatasta published by Electa.
In June 2012, he was the curator responsible, together with Architect Michele Ghirardelli, for the exhibition on Prof. Mario Zaffagnini held in Bologna at the Fondazione del Monte di Bologna e Ravenna, then from September 2012 at the Urban Center (Sala Borsa) in Bologna.
From 2014 to July 2024 he was Scientific Coordinator and organised no less than 10 editions (annually) of the Ferrara International Ph.D. Workshop IDAUP of the DA of Ferrara. This is a series of international seminar and conference events on the most topical issues of contemporary scientific research with international guests and lasting two weeks, held at the Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara.
In December 2016 he was invited as a speaker and discussant at the conference "La ricerca che cambia" 2° Convegno nazionale dei dottorati italiani dell'architettura, della pianificazione e del design" organised by IUAV in Venice. Promoted by IUAV Doctoral School Benno Albrech Director. The event is curated by L. Fabian and M. Marzo. He is discussant in the thematic table entitled: "Research in the area of design and technological planning of architecture" coordinated by Prof. Massimo Perricioli (1/12/2016), then moderator in the thematic table "Internationalisation" (02/12/2016) and Coordinator of a session of the table "Innovation and doctoral research" 02/12/2016. Finally, he was invited as a speaker in the concluding Plenary Session of the Conference (02/12/2016).
In December 2022, he was invited to the conference "La ricerca che cambia. 3° Convegno nazionale dei dottorati italiani dell'architettura, della pianificazione, del design, delle arti e della moda" organised by IUAV in Venice. He has been appointed as Referee (former ICAR/12 - CEAR-08/C) within the selection procedure of the doctoral theses of technological content presented during the conference and invited to participate as discussant at the I.A. Workshop of Doctorate Coordinators entitled: "Research in the area of Technological Design of Architecture: issues, problems, potential" at IUAV Doctorate School IUAV Director Prof.ssa Maria Chiara Tosi.
Scientific production

He is the author of around 130 publications of technological content in books, scientific journals, International Journals (also indexed) and Class A ANVUR journals as well as audiovisuals, CD ROMs and DVDs, on the topics of the recovery and reuse of historical buildings, technological innovation, underground architecture, energy efficiency, sustainable architecture and recently on technological topics related to the Smart design of cities.
He has conducted a number of video interviews with leading figures in contemporary architecture, including those with Michael Hopkins (2003), Eduardo Souto de Moura (2003), Dominique Perrault (2003) and Herman Kaufmann (2011).
Together with Alberto Di Cintio and Elisa Segoni, he is the author of the subject of Alberto Di Cintio's DVD dedicated to "Mario Zaffagnini" (2010) for the series I maestri dell'architettura e del Design , published by the University of Florence's c.s.i.a.f. for the "Pierluigi Spadolini" TAED Department of the same University.

Since November 2019 to date, he is also an invited member of the Scientific Committee of the International Magazine "Forum A+P" Inter-disciplinary Journal of Architecture and Built Environment. Forum A+P is a scientific journal published by POLIS University since 2010 - ISSN: 2227- 7994.
Awards
In 1989, he won a scholarship, which he used to attend the course 'Introduction to computers in design' (S.S. Fall 1989) (Lecturers: Prof. Karen Kensek and Prof. Douglas Noble) at the College of Environmental Design Department of Architecture, University of California at Berkeley, CA, U.S.A.
In 1999 the Cd Rom on the Abbey of S. Stefano (in Bologna) he collaborated on with Eventi Progetti Speciali of Bologna won the Prix Moebius City of Lugano as best product in the Culture Arts Letters section. In 2011 the same Cd Rom was translated into 5 languages and participated in the International Prix Moebius in Beijing (China).
In 2013 a project (in collaboration) for a temporary exhibition pavilion for the launch of a new Volvo car model V60 Hybrid is shortlisted in the International Architecture Competition / Contest The Plan - Volvo "Switch to pure Volvo - architecture competition in which more than 150 firms from all over the world participate. The shortlisted project was published in The Plan magazine No. 68/2013 and in the online website of the same name.
In July 2020 he received Special Mention for the Group of which he is Senior Tutor i.e. the FE-FI Group within the SITdA WORKSHOP PRIZE RELIVE-2020 (Rome, 2020). The subject of the design competition was a design proposal for the architectural and functional redevelopment of the ERP building sector of Tor Bella Monaca in Rome.
