Full Professor of Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Chemistry at the Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy and Prevention, Department of Life Sciences and Biotechnology, University of Ferrara. He was a Research Associate at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (Bioorganic Section, Prof. Morris Robins, 1987–1988) at Brigham Young University, Utah, USA. He was awarded the Giacomello Prize by the Italian Chemical Society, Division of Medicinal Chemistry. He has carried out research and teaching on drugs and health products in collaboration with numerous leading international research institutions (University of Leuven, University of Montpellier, Karolinska Institutet, Novartis Research Institute, Glaxo-Wellcome-SKF, University of Bordeaux, University of Jena, University of Cambridge, etc.). He has extensive experience in the preparation of natural and synthetic molecules using extraction, synthesis and biotechnology techniques, and their applications in the pharmaceutical, nutritional and cosmetic sectors. Some of the results of this research are currently being applied in various products, particularly in the cosmetics and food supplements sectors, which are currently distributed in Italy, Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, the United States, China, Australia, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, Korea and India.
Particular attention is focused on applications in the dermocosmetics, nutricosmetics and medical devices sectors. Of particular note: among the most potent antioxidant molecules currently available on the market, alongside new applications of hyaluronic acid in the dermatological, cosmetic and ophthalmic sectors. The research activity has led to over 250 publications and more than 20 granted patents and patent applications. Teaching activities are carried out within the Master’s Degree programme in Pharmacy, the Bachelor’s Degree programme in Biotechnology, and the Master’s Degree programme in Industrial Biotechnology for Biopharmaceuticals, Cosmetics and Nutraceuticals at the University of Ferrara.
Director of the Level II Master’s Degree in Cosmetic Science and Technology (COSMAST), founded in 1979, of the Training/Specialisation Course for Specialist Cosmetologists in Cosmetic Products (CSPC) and for Regulatory Compliance Officers (PRRC), all at the University of Ferrara. Founding partner in 2003, together with Silvia Vertuani, of the academic research spin-off in the cosmetics and nutrition sector: Ambrosialab, which merged into the Complife Group in 2024. Over the years, he has held various institutional posts: Vice-Rector for Patents, Spin-offs and Technology Transfer, Dean of the School of Pharmacy and Coordinator of the Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Pharmacy. He has been Vice-Rector of the University of Ferrara since January 2026 and Vice-Rector for Advanced Education at the University of Ferrara Master School (UMS) since 2021.
