Fabio Conato
Born in Bologna the 30 of September 1965
1 – Synthetic scientific profile
Graduated in Architecture in 1991 with honors, Fabio Conato, since the beginning of his career, has undertaken an intense scientific activity as a consultant of the Scientific Committee of the International Building Exhibition (SAIE), one of the three most important events of the construction sector in Europe, participating in the definition of the scientific project of international conferences, exhibitions and publications.
Expert on the subject of Technology for Architecture since the early nineties, he was appointed lecturer in 1994-95, he has been researcher ICAR/12 since 1999 and Associate Professor of Technology for Architecture since 2010.
Professor of Materials and Design of Building components at the Department of Architecture in Ferrara, he has developed, since more of fifteen years, research activities in the field of building envelope.
From the enactment of Legislative Decree 192/2005 and of the latest regulations, he has oriented his scientific activities to the issue of building envelope technologies aimed at controlling and certificating its performances.
He has been responsible for the operative objective called “Enclosures with high performance”, inside Larco Laboratory, credited in the High Technology Network of Emilia Romagna, as well as coordinator of the research program - measure 3.1. “Building envelope-Systems integrated models”.
He is member of the Academic PhD Board ICAR/12, tutor of several PhD thesis and also advisor of several dissertations. He was President of the Commission of State Exam 2012 for the authorization to practice.
He has carried out several activities in the University and has also been designated member of the Commission Statute and coordinator of the didactic activities of the first year of Master Degree in Architecture.
He is author of national and international essays, publications and articles in books and magazines; over the time he has carried out design and research activities, applied to specific case studies, with strong disciplinary relevance.
He is also required to participate in seminars, conferences, symposia and workshops as expert on the issues of building envelope and energy efficiency in buildings.
2 – Detailed summary of didactic activities
2.1 – Activities in courses of Department of Architecture, Ferrara
• From the academic year 1991/92 to 1994/95 he was appointed “Cultore della Materia” for the scientific sector ICAR/12 “Technology for Architecture”. He also participated at the didactic activities of the courses of this disciplinary area.
• In the academic years '94/'95, '95/'96 he was professor with contract for the course of “Materials and Design of Building Elements” (30 h) inside the first Laboratory of Design for Architecture course, characterizing subject (120 h) of the Laboratory of Construction Building I.
• In the academic years 1997/98 and 1998/99 he was professor of “Materials and Design of Building Elements” (120 h), fundamental course of the first year of the Master Degree in Architecture.
• He collaborated from the academic years 1999/2000 to 2004/2005, with the didactic activities of the “Environmental Design” course, held by prof. Stefano Comandini, conducting several lessons on the topics related to building regulations drawn up in terms of environmental sustainability.
• From November 1999, he was researcher at the Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara and got the course of “Materials and Design of Building Elements” (120 hours) in the academic years 1999/2000, 2000/2001, 2001/2002, 2002/2003, 2003/2004, 2004/2005, 2005/2006, 2006/2007, 2007/2008, 2008/2009, 2009/2010.
• Since December 2010, he has become Associate Professor in the scientific sector ICAR/12 at the Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara and got the course of “Materials and Design of Building Elements” (120 hours) in the academic years 2010/2011, 2011/2012, 2012/2013, 2013/2014, 2014/2015, 2015/2016.
• In the academic year 2011-2012 he held the form of “Materials and Design of Construction Elements” (30 hours) within the Laboratory of Design for Architecture 1 and the module of “Materials and Design of Building Elements” (30 hours) within Laboratory of Product Design 1 (Degree in Industrial Product Design).
• In the academic year 2014-2015 he was the holder of the module of “Environmental Design” within the integrated Environmental Design course (40 hours), at the third year of the Master Degree in Architecture.
2.2 – Other activities inside the University
• He has been effective member of the Degree Boards from 1999 since now.
• He is didactic coordinator of the first year of the Master Degree in Architecture at the University of Ferrara.
• Since November 2010, he has been Delegate of the Department of Architecture for Orientation and Tutorship.
• He is member of the Statute Commission.
• He was member of the Commission for the entrance exam at the Master Degree in Architecture at the University of Ferrara, for the AY 2000/01, 2001/2002, 2002/2003, 2009/2010, 2010/2011, 2011/12, 2012/13, 2013/14.
• He was President of the Commission of State Examination in 2012, for the authorization to practice.
2.3 – Activities as supervisor in degree thesis
• In the first session of graduate at the Ferrara’s Faculty of Architecture, in February 1997, he was supervisor of the thesis “Tracce di una storia” whose candidates, Claudia Fava and Carlotta Lo Verde, reported the mark of 110/110 with honors. An abstract of this work was published on “Costruire in laterizio”.
• In July 1998 he was supervisor of the thesis “Ipotesi di Recupero del Complesso Rurale ed Ecclesiastico di Montecalvo” whose candidate, Stefania Filippini, reports the mark of 110/110 with honors.
• In October 1998 he was supervisor of the thesis “'Ipotesi di Recupero del Complesso Monumentale dell'Abbazia di Monteveglio (BO)” which has, as its object, the management of historical buildings through computer electronic intervention. The candidate, Michele Saglioni, reports the score of 110/110 with honors.
• He was supervisor of the thesis “Ipotesi di recupero del complesso di Villa Venturi a Malalbergo”, graduate students Lucia Bentivoglio Silvia Buriani. The thesis was discussed in July 1999.
• He was supervisor of the thesis “Ipotesi di recupero di un borgo dei cavatori di gesso a Bologna” of the candidate Annalisa Piermartini. The thesis was discussed in October 1999.

• He was supervisor of the thesis “Teatro popolare di Sciacca, proposta di recupero attraverso il completamento funzionale e tecnologico dell’edificio nel suo contesto”. The graduate student, Giuseppe Camillo Santangelo, discussed the thesis the 9th of November 2006. The thesis was reported at Nardi Award 2007.
• He was supervisor of the thesis “Recupero dell’ex fabbrica Torreggiani a Bologna con realizzazione di residenza solidale per anziani”, graduating student Boriana Kostadinova. The thesis was discussed in October 2011.
• He was supervisor, with Prof. R. Di Giulio, of the thesis of Chiara Ophelia Schiatti, entitled “Costruire sulla città: Strategie di rigenerazione urbana a impatto zero”. The thesis was discussed in July 2013 and achieved the grade of 110/110 with honors.
• He was supervisor, with Prof. N. Marzot, of the thesis of Valentina Frighi, entitled “Grattailcielo: un’offerta abitativa integrata per la rigenerazione urbana del comparto ferroviario della città di Ferrara”. The thesis was discussed in July 2013 and achieved the mark of 110/110.

2.4 – Additional didactic activities
• He held, as part of a collaboration between the Department of Architecture of Ferrara and CSA (Center for Business Studies) of Bologna, an activity of organization of postgraduate courses for architects, in the technological sector. Within this activity, he was responsible of the organization of the postgraduate course funded by the Emilia Romagna Region called “Ecological Design” (on the topic of executive design and environmental sustainability), at the Department of Architecture of Ferrara. He oversaw the program, the structure of the didactic activities, the didactic materials, part of the lessons, the external internships and the final examinations.
He also took part in the organization of the course funded by the Emilia Romagna Region “Restoration and Conservation of Rural Buildings”, in Pieve di Cento (BO) collaborating in drafting the program, taking classes and being involved in “Project Work”.
• He carried out didactic and coordination activities of the postgraduate qualification course “Planning and recovery of the environment”, in collaboration with the Provincial Construction School of Ravenna.
• Since 2014 he has coordinated the learning experience “Il cantiere in aula”, through which students of the second year of the Master Degree in Architecture, following the Laboratory of Construction of Architecture, made some real technical elements with materials provided by various corporate partners of the Department.
3 – Detailed summary of scientific activities
3.1 – Research activities
• He was collaborator of the research program MURST 'Techniques and innovative elements for the construction of urban spaces', at the Faculty of Engineering of Bologna.
• From 1995 to 1998 he was coordinator of research programs commissioned by the consortium Coopertoscana at the Ferrara Research Consortium (CFR) for the development of the computer program PACE, aimed at completing technical documents of contract.
• Since November 1999, after a comparative assessment procedure, he has been appointed researcher for the scientific sector ICAR/12 “Technology for Architecture”, at the Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara.
• In 2000-2001, he promoted and coordinated the research program for young researchers "Continuity, innovation and experimentation in materials, technologies and building elements", which obtained funding.
• In 2000-2001 and 2001-2002 he took part in drafting the research program MURST 60% - "Tools and techniques for the recovery and sustainable redevelopment of building types in rural plains of Bologna-Ferrara."
• From 2002 to 2004 he coordinated the research “Assumption of Masterplan for Villas' Park” commissioned at the Department of Architecture of Ferrara through the Ferrara Research Consortium, by the City of San Lazzaro (BO).
• From 2003 to 2005 he was member of the research program PRIN “Evaluation criteria and control procedures of stress condition due to morphology, mode of use and environmental conditions of confined spaces with high sterility”, Scientific Coordinator Prof. Romano Del Nord, Scientific Unit Responsible Prof. Roberto Di Giulio.
• From summer 2003 to winter 2004 he organized and coordinated monitoring instrumental campaigns to measure the performance of a glazed double skin façade, in order to assess its operation and study the possible evolution of the system. The results of this campaigns, conducted with the help of the Faculty of Engineering of Bologna, has been disseminated through several contributions inside the journal MODULO.
• In the winter of 2004 he was confirmed in the role of Researcher at the Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara.
• From 2004 to 2010 he held, as scientific supervisor, matching funds for research grants, aimed at developing prototypes of technologically advanced facades to be proposed in the Italian context. These research grants were primarily funded by private companies.
• Since 2004 he has been member of several research groups working on programs funded by FAR.
• Since 2004 he has been recipient, as scientific supervisor, at the Department of Architecture of Ferrara, of donations and grants for research programs aimed at optimizing building systems in terms of energy efficiency, carried out by companies of the sector of building envelopes as Metra SpA, Vetro ventilato Srl and Wolf System SpA.
• Since the autumn of 2005, he has been appointed by the Consortium Ricos (Consortium for research, technology transfer and innovation in construction industry, among Istituto Cooperativo per l’Innovazione, Carisbo Foundation and Ferrara Faculty of Architecture), Scientific Coordinator for the objective 1.1 of the Larco Laboratory (Construction Research Laboratory) founded for the biennium 2005-2007 by the Emilia-Romagna Region. This Objective concerned the “Innovative Technologies for External Closures”. The mandate is renewed for the 2007-2009 biennium.
• In November 2006, he was appointed scientific supervisor for a study commissioned by the City of San Lazzaro (Bo) to the Ferrara Research Consortium, concerning the definition of criteria of bioclimatic, technologic and sustainability design, in order to evaluate architectural projects.
• From October 2009 until October 2011 he was coordinator and responsible of the research entitled “Integrated systems of building envelope and technology system for the energy efficiency of different types and construction building”. This research was within the European measure 3.1. A and was funded by Emilia Romagna Region.
• From June 2011 to June 2013 he was responsible of the research grant called “Building envelope-System integrated systems for the Energy Efficiency” enrolled by Dr. Simona Cinti. This activity has allowed to study issues related to the interaction between performance and casings systems in two significant pilot yards, such as a new residential tower in Castel Maggiore (Bo) and a residential complex inside the Bertalia - Lazzaretto Plan (Bo).
• From April 2013 to June 2014 he was responsible of the research grant entitled “Integrated systems of building envelope, structures and systems for energy efficiency in redevelopment the existing building” enrolled by Dr. Raffaella Zanotti and related to the verification of the applicability of integrated solutions of heterogeneous components, in order to guarantee the overall performance of non-prefabricated set of technologies, both in new and in existing buildings.
• From June 2014 he has been responsible of a third parties research program, on behalf of the Consortium Future in Research, commissioned by TPER Bologna (public transport company), aimed at identifying the development lines of the new ticket office system, based on environmental sustainability and material.
• During 2014 he became responsible of several Memoranda of Understanding, signed between companies in the sector of building innovation and the Department of Architecture of Ferrara, in order to implement a Center for collect, process and evaluate new building components and generate synergies for optimizing the complementary nature of several technical solutions. Through this center, he has coordinated the mentioned experience “Il cantiere in aula”.
3.2 – Specific activities as part of the PhD Academic Board of Technology for Architecture.
He was member of the PhD Academic Board of Technology for Architecture, cycles 15th (AA 1999-2000), 16th (AA 2000-2001) 17th (2001-2002), 18th (AA 2002 -2003), 19th (2003-2004) and the 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 (2009-2010), associated centers University of Ferrara - University Institute of Architecture in Venice. Research address: "Quality of product and quality of process: innovative trends aimed at the construction of the project of architecture."
• From 2000 to 2003 he was tutor of the PhD candidate Simona Cinti, who developed and discussed a thesis entitled “Double skin facades in Italy”.
• Since 2002 he has been tutor of the PhD candidate Beatrice Tarabusi, who has developed a research related to the innovative technologies for the redevelopment of residential twentieth century buildings.
• From 2006 to 2010 he was tutor of the PhD candidate Giulia Architetti, who developed a research on innovative technologies of building envelope for the energy improvement of twentieth century residential building. The thesis was discussed in March 2010 with the title “Application models of evolved building envelope”.
• Since 2006 he has been tutor of the PhD candidate Giuseppina Rotunno, who developed a research on the interactions between building envelope and evolved technological systems for the energy improvement of twentieth century residential building.
• From 2007 to 2010 he was tutor of the PhD candidate Giuseppe Camillo Santangelo, who developed a research on innovative technologies for building envelope, related to energy consumption of buildings. The thesis was discussed in December 2011 with the title of “From the component to the system: the critical interface of building envelope in traditional building systems”.
• Since October 2010, he has been tutor of PhD candidate Francesca Pisi, who drawn a thesis on the certification of the energy performance of building envelope systems.
3.3 – Activities in the International Building Exhibition (SAIE)
• In 1992 he was appointed by Bologna Fair Corporation as researcher of the Technical Advisory Committee of SAIE (International Building Exhibition). This appointment is renewed for many subsequent editions of the fair.
• As appointee, he participated in the scientific and organizational project of the volumes to the event “Cuore Mostra”, inside SAIE, editions 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998.
• He took part in drafting the program and the organization of the book “Sustainable Building”. The activity, carried out as part of a collaboration between the Department of Architecture of Ferrara and the technical and scientific committee of SAIE, was held through the participation in identifying the topics that had to be explored inside the book and through the definition of the case study to analyze. This activity led to the development of a topic of study that characterized three series of events related to SAIE: 2000, 2001 and 2002 editions.
• During the whole of the years of collaboration with SAIE he made several study trips during which contacted, interviewed and collected material at the studios of Norman Foster, Terry Farrell, Michael Hopkins, Ove Arup, Richard Rogers, Jean Nouvel, Jean Pierre Buffi, Claude Vasconi, Paul Chemetov, Dominique Perrault. On these occasions, he visited several yards, knew architects and analyzed the methodology of scientific approach.
3.4 – Participation in conferences, seminars and interviews
• During the summer of 1992 he took part in the research called "Social and modernity of living in 2000" organized by Club '87. Its contents are attached to the proceedings of the forum “The Integrated Programs”, held in Bologna.
• In November 1992, during the conference “The typological method between architecture and environment”, he presented the contribution entitled “Tradition, modern and technology”.
• He participated to the organization of international conferences related to the event “Cuore mostra”, inside SAIE, for the editions of 1993, 1994, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003,
• In October 1993 he organized a conference of Jean Pierre Buffi at the Faculty of Architecture of Ferrara.
• Between August and September 1995, he was moderator of a series of round tables organized by BE-MA publishing, related to the evolution of typology and technology in residential buildings.
• In October 1997 he organized a conference of “Ove Arup & Partners” studio, at the Faculty of Architecture of Ferrara.
• He was presenters of a report entitled "The vertical connection of building" as part of the lecture series “Seminars for designers”, organized by BE-MA publishing and AICAR within SAIE 2001.
• He was presenters of a report entitled "The fascination of historical technology", as part of a conference called “San Lazzaro yesterday, today and tomorrow”, held at the “Conserve Italia”, San Lazzaro (BO), the 13th of December 2001.

• In 2004 he was called by the director of the journal MODULO to provide an interview on the subject of building envelope, inside the special issue of July-August, entitled “The human factor of innovation”. The magazine collects as “opinion leaders” those who have been identified and evaluated by the editors between the greatest Italian experts about the treated topics.
• In February 2005 he was invited by the city of Bologna to hold a seminar entitled “The existing housing as a territorial resource”, synthesis of doctoral activities followed as Tutor.
• On the 14th of March 2007 he took part, as president and chairman, at the Congress entitled “High performance building envelopes”, within the fair SAIEDUE, Bologna Fair.
• The 23rd of March 2007 he was invited to hold a seminar at the Council of Notaries of Bologna, on the theme of Legislative Decrees 192/2005 and 311/2006 and, more generally, on the issues related to the technological quality of buildings and the involvement that they have on notary acts.

• Since 1994, he has collaborated to the research activities for the books of the series “Costruire a regola d’arte”, published by BE-MA Editrice, on drafting type-technological details.
• He is the main character of a lot of headings and open debates on the journal “MODULO” published by BE-MA Editrice, Milano.
• He is editor of a series of thematic contributes on the topic of evolved building envelopes, on the journal “MODULO” published by BE-MA Editrice, Milano.
• Since 2003 he has been editor of the section “Building Technologies”, on the journal “L’Ufficio Tecnico”, published by Maggioli Editore.
• He is editor of the section "Energy efficiency and sustainable technologies", on the journal “L’Ufficio Tecnico”, published by Maggioli Editore.
• Since the beginning of 2009 he has started a collaboration with the magazine “MODULO”, aimed at the publication on the website of the journal of a guide to the advanced design of interactive building envelopes.
3.6 – Applied research and professional activities with disciplinary contents
• From May 1992 to September 1999 he carried out activities of executive planning and realization of relevant public works, including the Hospital of Ragusa, the International fair “Marble and Machinery” of Carrara (MS), by developing experimental technical solutions.
• In 2001 he received the prize “Metra author’s systems” for the glass facades that are part of the Fair of Carrara.
• Since 2004, he has dealt with scientific advice in several residential projects and office complexes, characterized by particular attention towards both to evolved building envelope systems and to a synergy between these lasts and the technological systems installed.
• From 2011, he has carried out monitoring activities on existing building, whom realization was the subject of previous research programs, for the application of evolved models of building envelope – aimed at optimizing thus model on the integration between building envelope and technological systems.
• He carries out regularly activities aimed at certificate building systems regards to the latest energy, acoustic and seismic regulations.
4 – Publications, written contributions, didactic materials.
He is author of more than seventy of essays, contributions, articles, chapters on book and monographs. This activity is carried out regularly during his entire scientific career and it represents the thoughtful synthesis of the several research and didactical activities that he carried out over time. It is particularly significant the on-going relationship with the magazine “MODULO” that is the most important scientific dissemination tool inside reference subject area.
