Andrea Balbo is Associate Professor (SSD ING-IND / 22) at the Engineering Department of the University of Ferrara and carries out his research activity at the “A. Daccò” Corrosion and Metallurgy Study Centre, Engineering Department of the University of Ferrara

EDUCATION
2001 : 5-Year degree with honours in Chemistry the University of Ferrara in 2001”.
2005: PhD from the Faculty of Industrial Chemistry of the University of Bologna with a thesis on “Development and characterization of SiC based ceramic materials”.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCES
- 2001 to 2006: research grant at the Institute CNR-ISTEC of Faenza, His research field focused on the development and characterization of new advanced ceramic materials, on the study of the processes of corrosion and oxidation at high temperature, on the study of solid-liquid interphases in ceramic systems, on the study of sintering processes and the correlation between the functional and mechanical properties of the ceramic materials and their microstructure.
- 2006 to 2008 research grant at the National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Industrial Quality of Brazil (INMETRO) in the Laboratory of Thermal Analysis and Particulate Systems (LATEP). The research activity: characterization by thermal analysis of different classes of materials, development of suspensions of nanoparticles (nanofluids) and characterization of their colloidal properties, study of thermophysical properties of materials.
- 2008 - 2020, researcher (SSD ING/IND 22) at the Engineering Department of the University of Ferrara
Since 2009 has been, also, associate researcher at the Institute of Science and Technology for Ceramics (ISTEC-CNR) of Faenza (Italy).
ACADEMIC QUALIFICATION
- 2017 National Scientific Qualification to fill the role of Associate Professor in the Italian Universities, in the recruiting disciplinary field 09/D1.

TEACHING ACTIVITY- Courses
- 2009 – today: “Fundamentals of chemistry and materials” at the undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering (9 credits, LT) at the Engineering Department of the University of Ferrara.
- 2015– today: “Applied chemistry” the undergraduate degree Civil and Environmental Engineering (6 credits, LT) at the Engineering Department of the University of Ferrara.
- 2019– today: “High temperature material degradation and degradation protection” (6 credits, LS) at the graduate degree in mechanical Engineering, at the Engineering Department of the University of Ferrara.
-2014 – “Corrosion and degradation of materials in a biological environment” for 1st level Master in “Materials, products, processes and systems for the biomedical industry”, Engineering Department, University of Modena and Reggio-Emilia;
-2022 –today “Corrosion and corrosion protection of engineering alloys” (6 credits, LS) at the graduate degree in mechanical Engineering, at the Engineering Department of the University of Ferrara.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY TOPICS
Currently the scientific activity of Prof. Balbo is addressed to the study of corrosion phenomena of metal alloys and their inhibition by means of different classes of substances, to the development of protective coatings against the corrosion of metals for industrial applications and in the cultural heritage field, to the development of metal and / or ceramic matrix composite, to the study of the corrosion behaviour of metallic alloy fabricated by additive manufacturing technique to the study the corrosion behaviour of metal and electroconductive ceramic composites used for biomedical applications.
Currently his research activity focuses on:
- characterization of the corrosion behaviour of materials made with SLM technique
- corrosion and corrosion protection of light alloys (Al and Mg alloys) in different environments;
- corrosion and stress corrosion of lean duplex stainless steels;
- corrosion and tribocorrosion of electroconducting ceramic materials for biomedical applications;
- corrosion protection of metallic alloys by organic inorganic and hybrid coatings;
- corrosion inhibition by organic substances;
- corrosion and corrosion protection of bronze and gilded bronze in the field of cultural heritage;
- development of protective coatings for metals of artistic and industrial interest
- study of rebar corrosion behaviour in traditional and innovative concretes;
- development and characterization of ceramic matrix composite for structural and UHT applications.

His research activity produced 59 papers in peer reviewed international journals, 67 paper in conference proceedings and 2 contributions in edited book.

VQR RESULTS
The Results of the 2004-2010 VQR indicated that the research products presented are excellent.
The results of the VQR 2011-2014 indicate that the research products presented are excellent.

TUTORING
-supervisor of PhD student Engineering Science , XXVIII ciclo, research focused on “ Ultrahigh temperature ceramics for thermal protection system, propulsion and energy”, in collaboration with ISTEC-CNR.
- supervisor of PhD student Engineering Science of PhD student, whose research is focused on the characterization of the corrosion behaviour of innovative SLM alloys in simulated body fluids.

PARTECIPATION TO NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAMS
-2020 – 2023 New responsible of the UNIFE research unit of the UniFE Research Group of the 3 year European research project “PROCRAFT - PROtection and Conservation of Heritage AirCRAFT” . JPICH Conservation, Protection and Use Call 2019. Start date 1 October, 2020,.
- (2019-2022) two-year research project "IMPReSA: Use of recycled plastic materials for lightened structural mortars and concretes ", from 07/2019 to 02/2022. 2014-2020 POR-FESR Program. Role: member of the UNIFE research unit.
- (2019-2022) Two-year research project "Multi-functional and multi-scale investments, for McCarthy components in steel and aluminum alloys manufactured with additive manufacturing (RIMMEL). from 07/2019 to 07/2021. Role: member of the UNIFE research unit.
- (2017-2019). Biennial research project entitled "North Sea Solutions in Corrosion for Energy, NeSSIE", co-funded by the European Fund for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (EMFF) from 01/05/2017 to 30/04/2019. (Agreement n. EASME / EMFF / 2016 / 1.2.1.3 / 01 / SI2.752861). Role: responsible of the UNIFE research unit contract with ASTER.
