 Prof. Stockbrügger, born 22-08-1941 in Bunde/D, studied medicine at the universities of Münster/D and Uppsala/S. He graduated in Münster in1969. He moved to Sweden and trained in internal medicine and gastroenterology at a number of hospitals, and was registered in these specialities at the University Hospital Göteborg/S in 1976. In the same year, he received his PhD degree at the University of Göteborg with his thesis "Aspects of chronic atrophic gastritis – with special reference to serum gastrin and antral gastrin cells”. In 1978, he was appointed Associate Professor and Head of the Endoscopy of Sahlgrenska Hospital, Göteborg/S. He spent the next two years at the Middlesex Hospital in London/UK, with a post-doctoral grant from the Swedish Cancer Society, and performed there several studies together with Dr. Peter Cotton. After another five years in Goteborg, in 1985, he was appointed Head of the Clinical Rehabilitation Centre for Gastrointestinal and Metabolic Diseases “Marbachtalklinik” in Bad Kissingen/D. In 1990, he was appointed Ordinary Professor of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at the University of Maastricht/NL and  Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Maastricht University Hospital.

 Prof. Stockbrügger is a member of the national Societies of Gastroenterology in USA, Sweden, UK, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands and various other scientific societies. His research interests are in gastric acid secretion, peptic diseases, achlorhydria, gastrointestinal bacterial overgrowth, precancerous gastrointestinal conditions  and colorectal cancer screening, gastrointestinal motility, malabsorption, functional gastrointestinal diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, osteoporosis, and probiotics and have resulted in numerous publications (PubMed: “stockbrugger r”and “stockbruegger r”), contributions to textbooks, monographs and audio-visual productions. Prof. Stockbrügger serves on the Editorial Board of several scientific journals and is a regular reviewer of many. Since 2008, he is Principal Editor of the Eur J Gastroenterol Hepatol together with Prof. Didier Lebrec, Paris.

 Presently he is the chairman of the Public Affairs’ Committee of the United European Gastroenterology Federation (UEGF). He has recently become a member of a joint UEGF/UEMS committee for the assignment of European CME credits (EACCME).

 Reinhold Stockbrugger retired officially from his position in Maastricht in 2006, but follows still one PhD student there until her doctorate. Presently, he lives with his family in Italy and works as Contract Professor in Internal Medicine at the University of Ferrara, where he takes part in the graduate training, postgraduate training, and in gastroenterological research in the field of colorectal cancer screening. He practices his medical specialities in an outpatient setting in the city of Ferrara.
