Prof Matteo Marti (summary profile)

POSITION: Associate Professor on the SSD MEDS-25/A (ex MED/43), Legal Medicine, at the Department of Translational Medicine of the University of Ferrara, Italy. He also has the achievement of the national scientific qualification for the role of Associate Professor for 05/G1 Pharmacology, Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacognosy on the SSD BIO/14-Pharmacology.

  • July 1996. Degree in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Technologies discussing the following experimental work: “Cholinergic modulation of glutamate release from rat striatal slices”.
  • April-October 2000. Research stage in electrophysiology at the Department of Neuroscience, Clinical of Neurology (Prof. Paolo Calabresi), University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, Rome, Italy.
  • January 2001. PhD in "Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine. Title of the thesis: "Alterations of striatal glutamatergic transmission in a model of Parkinson's disease. In vitro and in vivo studies.”
  • July 2002-2006. He served as a Research Fellow at the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, Section of Pharmacology at University of Ferrara. Title of the research: "Study of alterations in striatal glutamatergic transmission in experimental models of movement disorders: Parkinson's disease and Huntington's Disease".
  • August 6, 2006 –July 31, 2009. He served as associate for research at the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, Section of Pharmacology, University of Ferrara. Title of the research: "receptor ligands for the nociceptin / orphanin FQ in the treatment of Parkinson's disease."
  • From 2009 to 2011. He served as a fellow at the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine on the project entitled: "Evaluation of the antidiskinetic activity of new receptor ligands for the nociceptin/orphanin FQ receptors".
  • From December 6, 2010 to May 5, 2013 he has a research grant at the IRCSS, Saint Lucia Foundation, Rome. The project funded by the Ministry of Health in the context of the program " Young Researchers 2008" entitled " Modulation of the composition of the NMDA receptor in a model of early parkinsonism and dyskinesia induced by L-DOPA: new therapeutic strategy."
  • From 2000. He is a collaborator and advisor to Police forces (RIS Carabinieri, Polizia, DCSA) and various national associations for the study of the use of psychoactive substances in criminogenic and sectarian contexts.
  • From 2010 he starts preclinical pharmaco-toxicological studies on Novel Psychoactive Substances in collaboration with National and International Institutions.
  • From 2012 to today, he coordinates one of the collaborative center of the National Early Warning System and Rapid Response to Drugs of the DPA of Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Italy.

Prizes and awards

Prof. Matteo Marti received a prestigious international recognition during the 10th International Conference on Novel Psychoactive Substances (NPS), held in Abu Dhabi (UAE, 6–8 November 2023), where he organized and directed the Pharmacology & Toxicology Workshop.

On this occasion, he was awarded by the International Society for the Study of Emergent Drugs (ISSED) for his outstanding scientific contribution in the field of NPS. The award recognizes his long-standing research excellence in the pharmacology and toxicology of emerging psychoactive substances and his leading role in fostering international collaboration between academia and global agencies (including WADA and UNODC) aimed at protecting public health and ensuring the integrity of sport.

Prof. Marti participated in the patenting of a system for the study of startle/PPI in rodents for Ugo Basile. The study carried out by Prof. Marti is part of the patent for a new application for the behavioral assessment in rodents of the effects of new narcotic and psychoactive substances on sensory gating.
