Curriculum vitae
An architect by training, Walter Nicolino practices in Italy. He graduated from the Politecnico di Torino in 2003 drawing a urban design project awarded with the Honourable Mention in the Archiprix 2003 – World’s Best Graduation Projects.
Since 2003 he has been working as partner of the office carlorattiassociati – walter nicolino & carlo ratti.
Related with Carlo Ratti’s research activity at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the office makes the encounter between digital technology and architecture one of its main research topics.
The firm’s works have been featured at numerous exhibitions, including the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2004, 2006 and 2010; the “Compendium Exhibition” at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London in 2005; Beyond Media, the festival of digital architecture in Florence in 2006; Digital_Minimal, an exhibition at the MIT Museum in Cambridge (MA) in 2006; Exploring Urban Futures hosted by GAFFTA in San Francisco (CA) in 2010; L’Italia dov’è for the Science Festival in Genova in 2011.
Among others projects, in 2008 the studio completed the “glass and green” extension to the Trussardi Cafè with french botanist Patrick Blanc and the Digital Water Pavilion in Zaragoza, Spain, chosen by TIME Magazine as one of the Best Inventions of 2007 in the architecture field and awarded Second Prize by the Fondazione Renzo Piano in 2011.
Among other distinctions, Walter was awarded with the Honourable Mention for Europan 7; the Second Prize for a community center in the city of Jurmala, Latvia. The firm was selected, together with an international team of artist and designers, for the last phase in the competition for the new tower landmark placed in the site of the London 2012 Olympic Games and the First Prize for a school extension in Cavezzo (MO).
The firm’s projects are published in several international magazines as Domus, Casabella, Abitare, d’Architettura, Frame magazine, Financial Times, Arcdesign, Diseno Interior, as well as in a number of architectural publications.
Walter Nicolino is often invited to present his works in several University and cultural institutions as Massachussets Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, Politecnico di Torino, Milan Triennale, InArch in Rome, Kent State University, IUAV, IAAD.
Walter Nicolino is a counselor member of the cultural association ZEROUNDICIPIU’, created to promote the quality in architecture through events, publications, lectures and workshop for students.
