3.   SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY

3.1  Membership      in research groups

3.1.1 Organization, management and coordination of research

3.1 groups and Coordinator of a research group (for which the website www.turbofe.it) composed of a variable number (which has reached 12 units) of researchers, PhD students, research fellows, research fellows operating in the sectors of Fluid Machines and Energy Systems. To date, the staff for which he was responsible is equal to 21 Research Fellows (also with multi-year contracts), 16 PhD students and 15 Fellows (with duration varying from 3 to 10 months).

The research group carries out research in various fields of Fluid Machines and Energy Systems, and has numerous collaborations with companies, institutions and national and international research groups, documented by the exchange of teachers and researchers, by funding received, by research contracts and scientific publications, documented in the following paragraphs.

3.1.1 Participation in research groups

From 1999 to 2010 he participated as a component in the activities of a research group active in the field of Machines and Fluid and Energy Systems coordinated by Prof. Roberto Bettocchi, former Full Professor of Energy Systems at the Department of Engineering of Ferrara, which also included an Associate Professor (later Ordinary), a Researcher with a permanent contract, a Researcher with a fixed-term contract of type A, and a variable number of Research Fellows and PhD students.

Alongside the research activities, the group has participated in numerous research projects through competitive calls with peer review and has also had numerous activities to its credit in collaboration with companies and research institutions. Furthermore, he collaborated on a regular basis with various Italian universities.

3.2  Responsibility of research laboratories

Since 2011, the writer is first as Coordinator and then as Head of the research activities of the Fluid Machines and Measurement Techniques laboratory of the Engineering Department of Ferrara. Over the years, the writer has dealt with the design, implementation, exercise, experimentation and coordination of the activities of researchers, fellows, fellows, undergraduates and trainees of the following test benches, mainly used for research activities but also for collaborations with companies and research institutions (year of construction or start of activity in brackets):

−         test bench for compressors (1999). The bench consists of an aeronautical-derived compressor (Allison 250-C18) driven by an electric motor controlled by an inverter with a power of 87 kW. Over the years the compressor has been fully instrumented for thermo-fluid dynamic, vibratory, acoustic and image acquisition measurements. It is also equipped with an acquisition system based on the National Instrument platform. To carry out the research activities, devices were therefore added to the test bench such as:

  • plenum downstream of the compressor to operate in stall and pumping conditions (surge);
  • system for the injection of demineralized water and washing fluids for wet compression and washing tests of the compressor;
  • solid particle injection system for axial compressor fouling tests.

−         small hydraulic test bench for tests on centrifugal pumps (2013). The bench is mainly used for the study of pumps fed with unconventional fluids, such as those with high viscosity and with non-Newtonian behavior (such as, for example, mixtures of water / kaolin and pear juice);

−         test bench for erosion tests (2019), used to evaluate the erosion behavior of coating materials of industrial fan blades subjected to the ingestion of solid particles according to the type of particles themselves;

−         test conducted for the study of surface deposition phenomena (2018). The bench is powered by a fan and a powder generator, and uses coupons hit by jets of air at variable speed and contamination;

−         test duct for testing the behavior of fan blades with insertions in shape memory materials (2016). This test bench, powered by a fan facing batteries of electric resistances for air heating, has also made it possible to develop innovative measurement techniques for the dynamic acquisition of deforming geometries;

−         fan test bench, for determining the performance of small centrifugal fans (2011);

−         microturbine of aeronautical origin converted to electricity generator (2012). The microturbine, powered by liquid fuel, is equipped with an electric generator and a resistance battery for load dissipation, and was used for experimentation on the problems of use with vegetable oils.

APPENDIX C

The research activity has developed continuously since 1999, first as a member of the research group coordinated by Prof. R. Bettocchi and Prof. PR Spina, and, starting from 2010, as Head of a research group . The main lines of research are illustrated and briefly described below.

1.    Study of gas turbines and turbomachinery for determining behavior and performance when subject to deterioration phenomena (fouling, erosion) and when operating in critical conditions (stall, pumping, water ingestion, dust ingestion)

1.1  Development of techniques for the analysis of the operating status of turbogas

This part of the research, the first in chronological order, concerned the development and fine-tuning of methodologies and calculation tools for the analysis of the operating status of turbogas . Calculation tools based on various techniques have been developed and used. In particular, techniques based on:

−         Gas Path Analysis (GPA) have been developed. In this case, a calculation program was built which allows to determine the characteristic parameters of the state of health of the gas turbine components, by means of the inverse solution of the thermodynamic cycle program of the machine starting from the measurements taken during normal operation.

−         Neural Networks. Neural networks created using dedicated toolboxes present in commercial programs such as MATLAB have been studied, analyzed and applied.

−         Fuzzy logic. The problems concerning the development of fuzzy logic systems, to be applied both individually and in connection with GPA techniques and based on Neural Networks, were investigated.

The research activity carried out by applying the various methodologies developed covers numerous fields of application, and in particular studies have been carried out concerning:

−         the identification of both the causes of malfunctioning of gas turbines, and their consequences in terms of variation in performance, in order to identify possible failure rules;

−         the analysis of the uncertainties associated with the use of codes based on the inverse solution of the cycle program and the improvement of the reliability of the code by determining the number and type of measurable quantities to be supplied in input;

−         the study and application of inverse cycle solution techniques in which several operating data sets are used ("multipoint" techniques) aimed at obtaining greater accuracy in determining the state of health of turbogas;

−         the development of methodologies for identifying unacceptable measurements within measurement sets;

−         the development of methods for processing the measurements detected on the machine with normalization techniques in order to identify any sensor failures, provide the program with a set of more reliable measures and obtain information through Trend Analysis (analysis of historical operating data) on the state of health of gas turbines and the deterioration of their performance over time;

−         the development of a software system for the online monitoring of gas turbines based on the Gas Path Analysis technique;

−         the development of tools based on neural or neuro-fuzzy networks, for the simulation and diagnosis of the state of health of gas turbines;

−         the application of the methodologies developed to the analysis of operating data of gas turbines used in combined plants, in cogeneration plants and for the compression of natural gas.

1.2  Numerical analysis for the study of the behavior of turbomachinery following fouling and

erosion an in-depth study on the effects of fouling and erosion within turbomachinery. This study is particularly important as it has a certain impact on numerous aspects of the operation of turbomachinery, both in terms of performance and economics, both in terms of diagnostics and monitoring. For these and other reasons, the knowledge of the mechanisms of fouling and the appearance of erosion, and their effect on the performance of turbomachinery is of great importance. Due to their nature, however, these two phenomena are particularly complex to analyze and model, first of all due to the difficulty of their stochastic nature and strongly dependent on the specific case and on the complex if not sometimes impossible experimental evaluation. For this reason, there is a lack of comprehensive literature on the subject and only very recently has there been an increase in interest in this type of study.

First, techniques were developed based on the study of the development of the performance maps of the machine components, and then evaluated the actual variation of the performance maps following the most frequent failures (fouling, mechanical damage and erosion) by means of aerodynamic coupling techniques of the stages (stage-stacking).

Subsequently, we moved on to the use of three-dimensional CFD techniques for the phenomenological study of the imposition of known effects of fouling (increase in thickness and surface roughness) on the performance maps of axial compressors. These effects were imposed on numerical models of a transonic compressor available in the literature. The numerical model, validated on experimental data from the literature, was used to evaluate the variation in compressor performance resulting from different degrees of fouling severity, varying both the thickness and the roughness of the blades in a homogeneous and inhomogeneous way. The results of the CFD analysis were subsequently crossed with those resulting from stage-stacking.

The next step was the development of further numerical CFD models, of data post-processing models in Matlab environment and of stochastic type models obtained by combining analytical and CFD models with data present in the literature with the aim of obtaining general trends. of degradation of the palar surfaces through the injection of Lagrangian entities inside the compressor that simulate the ingestion of the contaminants responsible for the phenomenon of fouling and erosion. A CFD methodology was therefore developed for obtaining the trajectories and dynamics of impact between the contaminants (which pass the filter barrier and enter the compressor) and the palar surfaces of the compressors. The study involved the analysis of several axial compressor models (transonic compressor and subsonic compressor, single and multi-stage) subjected to different types of degradation depending on the environmental conditions and the state of the filtering system, extrapolating the effects, as a function of time. of operation, on the degradation of the palar surfaces and consequently on the performance of the turbomachinery. The result was obtained by exploiting particular literature results which report the sticking probability as a function of the normal impact speed to the surface and the diameter of the contaminant. The analyzes have shown how the different designs and the different fluid dynamics phenomena are able to influence the adhesion of contaminants to the palar surfaces. The integration between CFD and analytical models has allowed the creation of maps showing the surface pattern of the deposition of contaminants of the palar surfaces. Finally, the same simulations were carried out taking into account the possible presence of a third substance (water, oil) to evaluate the change in the sticking conditions.

As there is no literature in this regard, original models have therefore been developed for the study of the interaction of solid particles with the compressor blades for the quantitative determination of the effect of deposition on the value and topology of the surface roughness. These models were then extended to take into account the detachment phenomena that occur due to the interaction between the deposited state and the air flow.

The approach adopted to analyze the deposition on the compressor surfaces was then extended to turbines, for which an original adhesion model based on the energy involved in the impact was developed. In this case, the simulation strategy coupled the innovative adhesion model with a mesh morphing approach capable of modifying the palar surfaces as a function of the adhesion of contaminants. Still in the context of turbines, recently attention has also been paid to the development and application of design techniques to make the machines resistant to fouling, including methods for its mitigation through Active Flow Control techniques. .

A very important result was obtained by studying in depth the general mechanisms of impact of particles on surfaces and a study was produced in which original interpretations of the functional relationships that influence this phenomenon were introduced. The study led to the definition of generalized impact maps based on dimensionless numbers. The results of this activity led to the publication of an article in the prestigious Progress in Energy and Combustion Science (Q1, IF: 28.938, Ranking WoS Mechanical Engineering: 1/130).

Finally, we want to underline how the research carried out on this topic has allowed the development of general methodologies that can be applied to numerous and different cases of fluid machines and energy systems. A first example is an analysis aimed at evaluating the interaction between the type of grid and its parameters and the model to take into account the surface roughness, the results of which were compared with experimental measures found in the literature, concerning the flow inside of a high pressure natural gas pipe. A second example of these lateral applications was the study of the fouling of the supply duct of a cogeneration internal combustion engine due to the presence of tar (tar) in the syngas stream coming from a biomass gasifier. A third example was the filing of an Italian patent application concerning a general deposition pattern for the prediction of the accumulated mass of solid microparticles on a surface, in which the surface is subjected to a flow of a fluid comprising the microparticles. Finally, as a fourth example, numerical techniques are recently being developed, implemented in open source software, to capture the details of the particle transport phenomenon by optimizing the computation burden, through analysis on the interaction between particles and interchange interfaces between domains, or through the use of Harmonic Balance techniques.

1.3  Experimental activity on an axial centrifugal compressor of aeronautical derivation

This research concerns the use of a test bench consisting of a reversible electric motor controlled by an inverter with a power of 87 kW to which an axial centrifugal compressor of aeronautical derivation is connected, obtained from the disassembly of the turbine gas Allison 250 C-18.

Over the years the compressor has been fully instrumented for thermo-fluid dynamic, vibratory, acoustic and image acquisition measurements. It is also equipped with an acquisition system based on the National Instrument platform. In order to carry out the research activities, devices have been designed and implemented on the test bench through which various lines of research have been followed, summarized below.

1.3.1 Study of pumping phenomena

To carry out this research, the bench was equipped with a plenum downstream of the compressor to operate in surge and deep surge conditions.

The research consisted in the analysis of dynamic signals coming from different types of measuring instruments installed on the compressor for the study of the compressor's behavior when operating in the instability zone (stall and pumping). In the literature, these tests are infrequent because the pumping condition can be destructive to the machine. A series of analyzes concerned the use of pressure (total and static), temperature (total and static) and flow rates. The experimentation has shown how even these measures, if properly elaborated, can be effectively used for the study of the light and deep pumping cycles.

Vibrational and acoustic measurements were then used, through the implementation of accelerometers and microphones. In collaboration with colleagues from the Mechanics Applied to Machines area, an innovative method of signal analysis was used (cyclostationary analysis) which allowed to characterize the operational instabilities and to identify the signature of the pumping precursors.

1.3.2 Experimentation with water injection to study the effects of wet compression and washing

Experimentation with water injection at the inlet of small compressors for wet compression and washing tests of the compressor is not widespread in the literature (in particular as regards the second type of tests) due to the difficulties connected with the experimental set up and with the elaboration of the measures. For this reason, a water injection system was added to the test bench consisting of a section for the production of demineralized water and a device for water injection consisting of four hollow cone nozzles. The results of the experiments carried out are summarized for both types of tests:

−         wet compression. Performance maps in dry and wet conditions were obtained and the main effects on performance were highlighted. Furthermore, using the plenum at the compressor delivery jointly, the behavior of the compressor in wet compression conditions during unstable operation (stall and pumping) was analyzed to determine the effect of water ingestion on the thermo-fluid dynamic and vibratory response. .

−         washing. Recently, the water injection system has been used for washing the compressor after it has been soiled under controlled conditions by ingesting particles of known quantities and types. For the quantitative estimation of this effect, a measurement technique based on the acquisition and comparison of images was used which allowed to determine the washing efficiency. During the experimental campaign, the effect on the washing efficiency of the addition of surfactants to the water was also evaluated.

1.3.3 Experimental analysis of the effects of the ingestion of solid particles

This line of research was triggered by the evidence that to date there are no systematic experimental studies under controlled conditions on the consequences and effects of ingestion of solid contaminating particles at the inlet of compressors (industrial or of aeronautical derivation) in “cold” conditions, ie with ingested air at room temperature. Two devices were therefore built to carry out this experimentation.

The first is a stand-alone device to evaluate the deposition mechanisms and quantify the amount of contaminant that is deposited on specimens of simple geometry and known material (which mimic the blades of machines) hit by an inseminated speed-controlled jet of air. with particles of various contaminants (typical of real applications). Systematic tests were carried out on these specimens under controlled conditions for the study of deposition phenomena and for the development of prediction models.

The second is instead a device enslaved to the test bench, which has been equipped with a solid particle injection system facing the axial compressor inlet. Also in this case, innovative measurement techniques were used for the qualitative evaluation of fouling patterns and for the evaluation of the amount of contaminants deposited, and isolating the results for the most representative sections of the compressor blades (leading edge, side under pressure, negative side, trailing edge).

1.3.4 Experimental and numerical study of erosion on turbomachinery blades resulting from ingestion of particles

This line of research has recently been activated by the evidence that to date there are no general models to be used in CFD simulation software for forecasting. of the erosion inside the turbomachinery, and those found in the literature are dated and in any case specific case. An ad hoc test bench was therefore built for this type of tests and experimental tests are underway for the erosion characterization of different combinations of particles and materials subject to the flow of particles. At the same time, some numerical applications were carried out, using customized versions of models already present in the literature, to large-sized industrial fans for applications in the cement and steel industry.

1.4 Simulation of the transient behavior of machines and energy systems

This research concerns the development and set up of simulation codes of the dynamic behavior of fluid machines and energy systems, which allow to simulate their behavior in anomalous conditions (stall and pumping ), in the presence of malfunctions and in off-project conditions (start-up).

1.4.1 Dynamics of compressors

In a first model developed a physical approach was adopted, which involves the integration of the equations of mass balance, momentum and energy. The physical model was developed in Matlab's Simulink environment. The model was applied to the simulation of a compression system, in order to predict its behavior in the presence of critical non-stationary phenomena, such as rotating stall and pumping (surge). Particular attention was paid to modeling the phenomenon of the surge. Then, the model was applied for the simulation of a compression system of both natural gas and gas mixtures (biogas or a mixture of methane and hydrogen). The model made it possible to obtain information on the design of the control system as a function of the fluid processed and the motor driving the compressor.

A second model was instead developed following an approach to graphs through which a modular software in the Matlab / Simulink environment was obtained. In this model a routine has also been inserted for the calculation of the axial forces that are discharged on the structural elements of the compressor resulting from the direct and reverse flow resulting from operation in surge and deep surge. The model was applied to the test bench installed at the SwRI in San Antonio, Texas (US), for which experimental data of the operation in critical conditions of a multistage centrifugal compressor were available. The model has been successfully validated and interesting information has been obtained on the pumping frequencies and on the values of the axial thrusts. Finally, an interesting result resulting from this activity was the proposal of a new dimensionless index (surge severity coefficient) for determining the pumping rate to which the compressor is affected as a function of construction and operating parameters.

1.4.2 Start-up of gas turbines

Models have been developed for the simulation of the start-up transient of large gas turbines. The first is based on the adaptation of experimental data and on a “quasi-static” approach. The model uses the stationary maps of the machine and considers the thermal state of the machine prior to starting. The model, implemented in Excel, made it possible to reproduce real operating data with excellent approximation. The second is instead based on black-box-type models such as neural networks, and in particular of NARX-type networks, which in particular made it possible to simulate the behavior of the gas turbine during start-up also considering the thermal state of the machine.

  1. Study of ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) systems and its components Organic Rankine Cycles

(ORC) are a technology used to convert low enthalpy energy sources into electrical energy, replacing water with an organic fluid, characterized from a lower boiling temperature which therefore allows its vaporization and consequent expansion for lower thermal inputs.

A class of ORC systems is that of small-very small size (<10 kW) for domestic use and for distributed micro-cogeneration. Unlike the larger ORC systems, these systems have been the subject of intense study in the literature only in recent years. These systems pose further constraints in terms of choice of plant layout, type of components and working fluid, as production and maintenance costs must be reduced as much as possible, given their application and intrinsic efficiency. In such systems, moreover, it is usual to use components not specifically designed for these applications, such as for example volumetric compressors used as expanders. It is therefore interesting to study the behavior of these components for this use in out-of-design conditions, especially during transients.

The research presented here developed within this perimeter and embraced various topics, both numerical and experimental.

From a numerical point of view, the problems connected to the study of geometries of volumetric expanders designed ad hoc or derived from compressors used in reverse have been attacked. To do this, three-dimensional CFD simulations based on dynamic meshes (ie deforming during the simulation) and using real gases (organic fluids) have been developed and set up. The activity started using commercial software with which different approaches for the management of dynamic meshes have been studied and developed. Also in light of the problems encountered on the latter, the activity then evolved with the use of open-source software for which ad hoc libraries were developed for the optimized generation of structured calculation grids. During the development of the research, above all geometries of scroll type expanders were analyzed, but applications were developed for single screw (single screw), double screw (twin screw) and lobe (roots) machines. The geometries are derived from real applications and have been obtained through the numerous collaborations established on this theme. An original case was the construction of a geometry derived from a scroll compressor obtained through a Reverse Engineering procedure developed in the laboratories of the research group. For all these machines, detailed numerical analyzes were carried out relating to the determination of the overall performance and the volumetric efficiency, the dynamics of the expansion, the criticalities connected with the presence of radial, axial and contact (flank) leakages, the reconstruction of the fluctuations of pressure, to study the flow in the most relevant sections of the machine.

An original methodology was also developed for the simultaneous three-dimensional simulation of multiple components (Whole Engine Model) and an integrated 1D-3D methodology which made it possible to study the reciprocal interactions between various components of the measuring circuit (including the measure). To take into account the real behavior of the fluids, then, methodologies were developed based on the modeling of the chemical properties of organic fluids through contribution group models and through the implementation of optimized calculation algorithms based on open-source libraries.

From an experimental point of view, research has been carried out in collaboration with the Department of Industrial Engineering of Bologna, in the laboratories of which a small size ORC system with piston expander is installed, developed and co-financed by the Ferrara research group. The researches concerned the development of a reliable and robust measurement system for the specific application and the experimental characterization of the system from the point of view of global performance from the point of view of micro-cogeneration.

Finally, an innovative energy system was studied and proposed consisting of the integration of a thermal photovoltaic system (TPV) and an ORC system for microcogenerative applications.

  1. Development of variable geometry axial fans through the use of shape memory alloys (SMA)

The research activity concerned the development of an innovative variable geometry blade concept, designed for use in axial fans for radiators of moving machines earth. This component is able to modify its shape through the use of shape memory alloy elements (SMA - Shape Memory Alloy) inserted inside the blade itself. In order to determine the feasibility of the palar structure prototype, consisting of a polymeric matrix inside which NiTi alloy sheets are housed, the study envisaged a first phase of experimental characterization of the metallic material (carried out in collaboration with the Metallurgy group of the Engineering Department of Ferrara). The subsequent analysis of the deformability of the blade was carried out through thermal activation tests inside a wind tunnel, specially designed and built in order to reproduce the operating conditions.

The use of innovative non-contact image analysis techniques allowed, during the execution of the thermal activation tests, the instant analysis of the deformation. These measurement techniques have been the subject of a dedicated publication published in the journal Measurement (Q1, IF: 3.364, Ranking WoS Instrumentation: 13/64).

The changes in the shape of the blade were analyzed, starting from the scanning of the surface, through 3D reconstruction of the deformation in a CAD environment. The CAD geometry was then used for the CFD analysis of the fan in order to highlight the different performances in relation to the polymeric material used and the analysis of the performances linked to the variations of the aerodynamic conditions (modification of the camber and the angle of attack). following the deformation.

  1. Numerical and experimental analysis of centrifugal pumps for processing non-Newtonian fluids.

The original idea of this line of activity takes its cue from the active collaboration since 2004 (with the manager Prof. Bettocchi until 2010, and then under the responsibility of the writer since 2011) with the company CFT - Rossi e Catelli di Parma, world leader in the production of plants for the production of tomato concentrate, for which dynamic mixed flow pumps have been continuously designed since 2004 that allow the handling of the product (in 2015 we arrived at a pump with a power of 1 MW). Following this activity, it has been highlighted that in the literature there is a lack of consolidated investigations regarding the design and analysis of the flow of impellers that process non-Newtonian fluids, such as tomato concentrate. A research activity was therefore undertaken, promoted by the writer, which was carried out numerically and experimentally.

The pumps studied were, at first, the tomato concentrate pumps, and subsequently pumps of smaller size and power that were derived from the experimental activity undertaken subsequently and described below.

From a numerical point of view, initially the few methods found in the literature for the correction of performance according to the characteristics of non-Newtonian fluids were thoroughly analyzed and subjected to criticism. These methods were then compared with the results of the numerical simulations performed on the pumps. At the same time, analyzes were carried out in different modeling conditions of the behavior of fluids, starting from the approximations of fluid with high apparent viscosity, and then investigating the effect on performance of the use of different constitutive laws (Bingham, Ostwald-De Waele, and others) and the type of motion regime modeling (laminar, low Reynolds number turbulence models).

Following the numerical part, in fact, given the scarcity of literature information, the need was felt to create a test bench specifically built to carry out tests with small centrifugal pumps using easily available non-Newtonian fluids. Therefore, some fluids with a non-Newtonian behavior, and in particular mixtures of water and kaolin, and pear juice were selected and rheologically characterized (in collaboration with the Polymeric Materials group of the Engineering Department of Ferrara). Extensive experimental campaigns were therefore undertaken to characterize the behavior of the pumps and which also made it possible to compare the results obtained with the experimental tests with those derived from numerical simulations.

  1. Performance analysis of thermal photovoltaic systems (TPV)

The research activity originally arose from the studies carried out by the writer on low-emission boilers with radiant cloth burners, developed in collaboration with the Baltur company of Cento (FE) starting from 2001. These burners have in fact proved to be very suitable for use as emitter in TPV (ThermoPhotoVoltaic) systems. The TPV system exploits the radiation produced by the canvas on which the combustion takes place which, taking to incandescence, takes on a temperature, and therefore a color, completely similar to the sun but with a power density up to 1000 times higher. Using photovoltaic cells facing these burners it is therefore possible to produce electricity.

Initially, the research develops with the study of the TPV as an energy system for distributed micro-cogeneration, through the determination of the performance of the TPV energy system, with evaluation of the yields and performance indices of its use as a generator and cogenerator.

Subsequently, a complex three-dimensional fluid dynamic model was developed through the numerical modeling of combustion and heat exchange. In particular, the potential of the Multiband numerical irradiation models for the frequency analysis of the incident radiation and for the calculation of the typical performance parameters of TPV systems were analyzed.

Following the start of the collaboration with IMEM of Parma, studies with thermodynamic models were carried out, which, after an extensive and critical literature survey on the state of the art of TPV modeling and its most recent applications, led to carry out parametric investigations (such as that on the influence of the emitter size) and to evaluate the integration with other energy systems (ORC).

  1. Energy production from biomass

6.1 Energy chains and estimation of the energy potential of biomass

The research activity concerned the study of energy systems powered by fuels obtained from biomass and waste in order to evaluate their performance, feasibility, operating methods and costs. To do this, a simulation model was developed and implemented in the Matlab environment, which considers the entire energy supply chain and assesses the economic and feasibility aspects, as well as environmental impact. The model allows to evaluate the choices necessary to identify the best system configurations with respect to the specific context and to carry out an efficient management. Among the various processes of transformation of biomass into fuel, the anaerobic digestion of maize and the organic fraction of municipal solid waste was initially considered. As energy systems, operating in cogeneration, both internal combustion engines and gas micro-turbines were considered. The model was then applied to the case of direct combustion of crude vegetable oil in single cycle or combined cycle internal combustion engines with ORC.

The activity was then developed by comparatively evaluating different complete energy chains from the production of biomass to transformation into energy, also making use of the agronomic skills of the DEIGRA of the University of Bologna which developed an integrated GIS model for estimating the crop potential of 'Emilia Romagna. At the same time, methodologies for estimating the (current and future) energy potential of biomass have been developed and applied to the Colombian case study: the methodology has demonstrated its applicability to all countries whose market is not large enough to significantly influence international markets.

6.2 Experimentation on a micro-turbine fueled with vegetable oil

Also following the comparative analyzes mentioned above, the activity focused on the dedicated vegetable oil chain with an experimental project: starting from different cultivation options, in particular corn, soybeans and rapeseed specially grown in the experimental fields of Agri-Unife at the Navarra Foundation in Malborghetto (FE), various types of vegetable oils were produced which, following chemical-physical characterization, were then used to power a microturbine (Solar T-62T-32), installed in the laboratory of the Engineering Department of Ferrara and suitably modified to be powered by liquid vegetable fuels. After an accurate characterization of the vegetable oils, experimental campaigns were carried out to evaluate its performance with different blends of the oils themselves (up to 100%) and biodiesel.

6.3 Biomass gasification

In connection with the previous point, the option of thermochemical gasification was evaluated for the use of crop residues of oilseed species, in order to obtain a sustainable supply chain. This was done through the development of an equilibrium model for the determination of syngas production in a downdraft gasifier.

In this field, microgeneration systems based on the production of syngas through downdraft gasifiers of small wood chips and its use in internal combustion engines have also been studied. The activity is carried out experimentally and numerically. In the first case, the layout was studied and the implementation of the instrumentation and dedicated acquisition systems of two systems installed at the Scientific Campus of the University of Parma, one with a power of 200 kWand used for tests of long duration for the evaluation of maintenance problems related to continuous operation, and one of the power of 20 kWel which was used to carry out a systematic test campaign using different types of wood (composition and in measured and controlled conditions ) for the characterization of their syngas production potential in terms of composition and calorific value. In the second case, numerical simulations were carried out for the thermo-fluid dynamics analysis of components of the Parma plant, such as the gasifier, the syngas-water heat exchanger and the connecting pipes between the exchanger and the engine covered by the syngas.

  1. Numerical analysis of combustion in gas microturbine combustion chambers and energy systems.

7.1 Combustion chambers of micro-turbines

The activity involved the study, through CFD numerical simulations, of combustion chambers of gas-fired micro-turbines fueled by renewable fuels. This activity arose from the biomass research line and focused on the study of the component, from the point of view of simulations, perhaps the most critical.

There were four microturbines whose combustion chamber was studied, the ARI100, Elliott TA-80R and Solar T-62T-32, with annular combustion chambers, and the Turbec T100, with cannular combustion chamber.

on the combustion chamber of the ARI100, developed by Ansaldo for a 100 kWel, to compare the morphology of the flame (in terms of temperature and speed distribution) with the results of the numerical simulations reported in the literature. These simulations were used to calibrate and validate the combustion models and reaction schemes for the subsequent activities on the other combustion chambers

On the first microturbine (Elliott T80 with a power of 80 kWand installed at the University of Perugia with which collaborated during PRIN 2006 and 2008) the RQL (Rich-Quench-Lean) combustion chamber was studied. The simulations were initially validated thanks to the availability of experimental data. Then, after analyzing the overall performance of the combustion chamber powered by natural gas, an analysis was conducted of the behavior of the combustion chamber itself if it is fed with biogas. Furthermore, simulations were carried out by feeding the combustion chamber with syngas derived from biomass, the composition of which had been experimentally detected at the Perugia plant. The differential performances between standard supply (natural gas) and syngas supply were analyzed.

The second combustion chamber analyzed was the one installed on the Solar T-62T-32 microturbine with a power of 60 kWel, already used for the evaluation of the overall experimental performance when fed with vegetable oil or blends of oil and biodiesel. A real combustion chamber was obtained from this turbine, the geometry of which was detected in real life using the Reverse Engineering tools supplied to the research group. Subsequently, the virtual model (CAD) of the chamber was then built and then the CFD simulation was carried out to determine the different performances compared to the conventional power supply (Jet A or Diesel) of the chamber itself in relation to the emissions, the temperature and speed range.

Finally, the third combustion chamber analyzed was the cannular chamber of the Turbec T100 microturbine with a power of 100 kWel. The design of the combustion chamber was provided by the company itself by virtue of a multi-year scientific collaboration of the CenTec Laboratory of Cento with Turbec SpA, which was based in Cento. This activity was partly carried out in collaboration with the CNR-DET of Naples where an experimental Turbec T100 plant was installed, and thanks to which it was possible to validate the calculation models having available experimental data from the plant. Countless simulation activities have therefore been carried out on this combustion chamber, among which the following are underlined: of the premixing chamber, variation of the ratio of the fuel fraction between pilot and main injectors) when fed with standard fuel (natural gas); (ii) verification of the adaptability of the combustion chamber as it is to supply with synthesis gas; (iii) performance evaluation when fueled with renewable fuels. In particular, the performance with the use of syngas derived from biomass (the same already used previously) and biogas were analyzed; (iv) evaluation of the flashback limit when fired with fuels containing increasing percentages of hydrogen.

7.2 Combustion chambers of energy systems.

Another research activity instead concerned the study of combustion, aimed at assessing the environmental impact of energy systems, through the development of a self-produced calculation code with the use of zero and one-dimensional techniques of the type with perfectly mixed reactors.

Experimental investigations were also carried out on the noise coming from industrial burners with aerodynamically stabilized flame. Interesting analyzes concerned the reduction of noise using inverters to regulate the number of revolutions of the burner supply fans.

  1. Study of conventional and innovative energy systems

8.1 Multi-energy systems and storage

This activity concerns the study of micro-cogeneration systems for meeting the needs of users in the civil and residential sector. In the first place, an energy and economic analysis of the systems was carried out in order to assess the feasibility of their application also in relation to user demand. The research then focused on the relationship of cogeneration systems with other systems for the distributed production of electrical, thermal and cooling energy at the service of residential buildings. In the first place, the optimal allocation of the electrical, thermal and refrigeration demand on the various production systems was analyzed and subsequently a methodology for the optimized sizing of the multi-energy system was proposed. Subsequently, the study turned to the co-optimization of sizing and focused on the contextual optimization of these systems and on the implementation of optimization criteria that also take into account the life cycle of the components.

8.2 Combined cycles

Analyzes of the combined cycles with integrated gasification (IGCC) and of the power augmentation technologies applicable to them were carried out. An innovative system has been proposed which is based on the evaporation of liquid nitrogen previously produced and stored: the implications on the gas turbine of the use of this system have been analyzed with particular regard to the aspects relating to combustion.

  1. Study and analysis of machines, energy systems and hydraulic circuits

The skills gained in numerical simulation, design and experimentation have led the writer to carry out numerous research activities of short duration or focused on specific topics concerning fluid machines, energy systems and hydraulic circuits. Among these, numerous activities began as collaborations with companies or with universities and then resulted in the conduct of more in-depth research and the consequent publication of scientific articles in various editorial locations.

9.1 Turbomachinery

This research concerns the study of turbomachinery, in particular of operating machines with incompressible fluid such as pumps and fans. The following activities were carried out:

−         study of models of small centrifugal pumps. Two types of machines have been studied: (i) a centrifugal pump derived from works of literature; (ii) a commercial centrifugal pump. This machine is installed in a test bench specially made in the laboratory of the Engineering Department and has a more complex geometry; for this machine the experimental data were obtained through direct experimentation. The numerical study of the two machines was essentially aimed at sensitivity analysis on the use of the most suitable models for the three-dimensional numerical simulation inside turbomachinery and for the study of the flow inside the machines themselves. The products of this activity were also used as test cases for carrying out the teaching activity within the Fluid Dynamic Design of Machines course;

−         study of self-priming centrifugal pumps with a reduced number of blades. In particular, the research involved the study of different types of impeller obtained by varying the geometry of the average line, the distribution of the thicknesses and the leading edge of the blade, using a self-produced code for the one-dimensional design of centrifugal pumps. Complete 3D simulations were then carried out for the choice of the most efficient configuration;

−         optimization of the fan / motor coupling for agricultural applications. −         study and design of industrial fans. These studies involved advanced design methodologies in industrial applications (aspirators, high-power burners, cooling systems for ceramic production, agricultural atomizers, snow cannons), the critical analysis of literature correlations for the design of centrifugal fans and axial, the numerical study of the effects of erosion in centrifugal fans for cement factories, the experimental determination of the noise emitted by medium and small size fans.

9.2  Energy systems

The activity is carried out has as its objective the analysis and design of energy systems and their components through the use of three-dimensional CFD thermofluidodynamic calculation codes and through the use of self-produced codes. In particular, the following activities were carried out:

−    study of advanced systems for energy storage based on solid / liquid phase change. The research was aimed at evaluating the potential for energy storage within devices in which there is a material which, thanks to the high latent heat of solidification, allows high accumulations of energy per unit of mass of the material. The activity was carried out with the FLUENT code, and through a self-produced code. The self-produced code, written in the Fortran programming language, is based on the Finite Volume Method, and can solve two-dimensional stationary and non-stationary problems concerning the conduction associated with phase change. During the development of the code, in addition to literature models, original numerical methods were developed, reported in the PhD thesis resulting from this activity. In a second step, the FLUENT three-dimensional numerical code was used to study the effects of adding natural convection within these systems. The problem was solved in non-stationary regime and also during this phase advanced simulation strategies were used to obtain the convergence of the results;

−         numerical fluid dynamics analysis for the thermo-fluid dynamics optimization of plants used in the food sector. In particular, a rotary oven for baking bread was studied and the uptake performance of extractor hoods was studied, for which a predictive formula was obtained that takes into account the viscosity of the fluid;

−         study of high efficiency boilers with wire cloth burner. The activity was both experimental, through the construction and testing of a suitably instrumented prototype, and numerical, aimed at simulating the entire boiler from the burner to the cooling water;

−         study and design of the gas expulsion system (chimney) of a cogeneration plant. In particular, a numerical study was carried out on the mixing of gases, coming at different temperatures from the gas turbine outlet and from the recovery exchanger, inside the chimney and on the consequences that this phenomenon has on the state of deformation of the chimney itself. and on the performance of the plant;

9.3  Study of systems and machines in oil and gas applications

The activities related to this topic have mostly resulted from collaborations with companies in the sector. In particular, the following were carried out:

−         two-phase numerical simulations for the analysis of the fluid dynamics and the uptake performance of slug catchers for deep sea applications;

−         numerical simulations with sloshing models of liquid hydrocarbon tanks transported on ships when subjected to extreme storm conditions for the verification of ripple limits and for the development of level sensors;

−         analysis and study through a reverse cycle program of the allocation and optimal management of the loads of gas turbines operating as engines for centrifugal compressors for the extraction of natural gas from depleting wells located in offshore platforms;

−         performance of pipelines for the transport of natural gas when operating with high Reynolds numbers and in the presence of roughness of the pipelines themselves. Through this research, indications were obtained on the correct strategies and choices for the generation of optimized grids in the presence of surface roughness;

−       design of a turbine for energy recovery during the rolling of natural gas in oil and gas plants.

9.4  Volumetric machines and hydraulic and pneumatic components

Strategies for the CFD fluid dynamics simulation of volumetric machines used in the automotive field have been created and developed. In particular:

−         gear pumps (internal and external) and vane pumps were analyzed with dynamic models with the aim of reducing the phenomenon of cavitation, increasing the volumetric efficiency, reducing vibrations and noise, improving the cold starting phase and balance the pressure thrusts inside the machine itself;

−         a 0D / 3D methodology was developed for the design and analysis of the main NVH problems of volumetric gear pumps based on a lumped parameter model that uses outflow coefficients deduced from the three-dimensional numerical simulation.

Recently, part of the activity on the simulation of external gear pumps has been devoted to the analysis of the applicability of the use of eco-friendly oils in place of conventional mineral and synthetic oils. After an initial phase of characterization of the properties of eco-friendly oils carried out both experimentally and with literature surveys, these were used in CFD simulations inside gear machines obtained, through the collaboration with ZF Automotive of Ostellato (FE) , from real applications.

In the field of components, the activity involved:

−         the study of components of hydraulic circuits used in automotive applications. In particular, the behavior of a pressure reducing valve was studied to identify geometries that would reduce cavitation and noise problems. To further investigate the study, advanced simulation strategies were also developed and in-depth analyzes of the flow were carried out to determine operating instabilities;

−         the study of a methane gas lamination valve in automotive applications. The valve has been studied with particular reference to real gas problems during expansions with a high pressure ratio.

9.5  Fluid dynamics of the human body

This research activity was carried out in collaboration with the Institute of Bioengineering (BIB) of Brunel University (London). The study focuses on simple fluid dynamics and fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis of blood vessels. The FSI approach is necessary where in the phenomenon under consideration the pressures exerted by the fluid on the solid boundary walls are such as to deform the wall itself so significantly as to modify the flow in turn, as in the case of carotid veins and arteries.

In particular, the following were analyzed: (i) problems related to the presence of stenosis (occlusion) of blood vessels; the study took into consideration, through the development of fully coupled fluid dynamics and structural simulations (FSI - Fluid Structure Interaction), various levels of vessel occlusion to study the fluid dynamics and structural consequences on the veins; (ii) the repercussions that these occlusions have on the circulation within the circle of Willis; (iii) the prediction of the trajectories of emboli within the cerebral arteries; (iv) measurement techniques for the reconstruction of atherosclerotic plaques from diagnostic images
