SUMMARY
Michele Morsilli is an Associate Professor at the University of Ferrara (Italy), with a MA (1994) in field mapping and geomorphology, and PhD (1999) in Carbonate Sedimentology from Bologna University.
His research is focused about the stratigraphic-sedimentological features of Meso-Cenozoic carbonate successions with field work in many places such as Italy (Apulia Carbonate Platform, Dolomites, Lessini Shelf, Ligurian Basin, Sardinia), Spain (Balearic Islands, Pyrenees and Iberian Basin), Caribbean (Aruba and Curacao), Ethiopia (Negele area), Egypt (Red Sea), Iran (Zagros area), Oman, Saudi Arabia, Emirates.
Research interests include carbonate depositional systems, facies analysis, stratigraphic evolution, and depositional architecture of Mesozoic and Cenozoic systems. He is also investigating the role of internal waves in sedimentary records and about paleogeographic distribution of carbonate platforms during the Cretaceous, Paleogene and Neogene, as well as Oceanic Anoxic Events and Climatic changes of the past. Recently he started to collaborate in applying machine learning on facies identifications and on Geological Heritage and UNESCO Global Geoparks.
He has done numerous collaborations with many researchers from Italian and foreign universities and has presented the results of his research at national and international conferences. He has been lecturing and advising student research since 2000 and has organized numerous carbonate field trips within Italy, Spain, Netherland Antilles and Red Sea (Egypt). He was involved since 2017 in the partnership with KFUPM, Stanford, Trinity (San Antonio), leading the field work in southern Italy.
He is a RPS-Nautilus leader for field course N494-Salento since 2018, and co-leader with Luis Pomar from 2008 to 2018 for field course M59- Balearic Islands.
