Prof. Mauro Venturini

Academic career.

Mauro Venturini graduated in Nuclear Engineering with honor at the University of Bologna (Italy) in 1997. In 1998-1999, he did his military service as an officer of the Italian Army (Alpine Troops).

He is currently an Associate Professor of “Energy Systems and Power Generation” at the Department of Engineering of the University of Ferrara (Italy), where he has also served as an Assistant Professor since 2000. From 2012 to 2019, he was accorded Recognized Teacher Status by Cranfield University (Cranfield, Bedfordshire MK43 0AL, England). Since March 2017, he has held the scientific qualification for Professorship in Italy.


Teaching activity.

Mauro Venturini has been the lecturer of “Dynamics, Control and Diagnostics of Energy Conversion Systems and Fluid Machines” at the University of Ferrara since the academic year 2002/2003 (MSc level). He has also been the lecturer of “Machines” since the academic year 2011/2012 (BSc level). At present, he lectures three courses: “Energy Systems” (BSc level), “Dynamics and Control of Energy Systems” (MSc level) and “Design of Energy Systems” (MSc level). In the two academic years 2012/2013 and 2013/2014, he was the lecturer of the module BPE03 “Energy from biomass” of the “Biofuels Process Engineering” MSc Course (Cranfield University, UK).

  • Diagnostics and prognostics of gas turbines;
  • Dynamics and control of energy systems;
  • Assessment of measurement reliability;
  • Energy production from renewable sources;
  • Micro-CHP systems.

  • The technical paper “Application of a one-dimensional modular dynamic model for compressor surge avoidance" (ASME paper GT2007-27041) was selected as the Best Paper Award winner for ASME Turbo Expo 2007 Congress;
  • The technical paper “CFD Simulation of Fouling on Axial Compressor Stages” (ASME paper GT2009-59025) was selected as the Best Paper Award winner for ASME Turbo Expo 2009 Congress;
  • The tutorial session “Centrifugal Compressor Dynamics Tutorial”, held during the ASME Turbo Expo 2011 Congress and organized by M. Venturini, J. Moore, K. Brun and R. Kurz, received the “Oil & Gas Applications Committee 2011 Best Applications Tutorial Award”;

Mauro Venturini has also been awarded for his scientific activity by the Industrial & Cogeneration Committee of ASME IGTI:

-      The technical paper “Analysis of a Multi-Generation Renewable Energy System With Hydrogen-Fueled Gas Turbine” (ASME paper GT2022- 81082) was selected as the Best Paper Award winner for ASME Turbo Expo 2022 Congress.

  • The paper “Development and Validation of an Advanced Simulation Model for ORC-Based Systems” (ASME Paper IMECE2012-85734), presented at the ASME 2012 International Mechanical Enginnering Congress & Exposition, was awarded as the 2012 Best Paper by the “Advanced Energy Systems Division”;
  • The paper “Analysis of Innovative Micro-CHP Systems to Meet Household Energy Demands” (Applied Energy, 97, pp. 723-733) was awarded by Elsevier as “Applied Energy - Highly Cited Research Paper 2012 to 2013”;
  • The technical paper “Application of a Statistical Methodology for Gas Turbine Degradation Prognostics to Alstom Field Data” (ASME paper GT2013-94407), also awarded as the “Oil & Gas Best Paper Award” winner, was also named “2013 John P. Davis Award” winner. This award is awarded annually by ASME IGTI in recognition of the technical paper that most significantly describes new or continuing gas turbine applications; identifies planning, installation, operating and/or maintenance problems and their solutions; and exemplifies candid exposure of real-world problems and solutions and is judged, therefore, to be of exceptional value to others supplying or using gas turbines and their support systems.

 

Management and public relations.

He is member and referee for the following ASME IGTI (International Gas Turbine Institute) Technical Committees: “Industrial & Cogeneration” and “Oil & Gas Applications”. Moreover, he has served as the Session Organizer for the “Oil & Gas Applications” since 2004 and as Session Chair/Vice Chair since 2002. For the same Committee, he has also served as the Committee Vice-Chair for the term 2009-2011, Committee Chair for the term 2011-2013 and once again Committee Vice-Chair for the term 2019-2021 and Committee Chair for the term 2021-2023.

He is Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power (term 2021-2024).

He is also a referee for several International Journals. For his activity as a referee, Mauro Venturini has received the following awards:

  • “Outstanding Contribution in Reviewing” awarded December 2014 by the Editors of Energy (Elsevier, Amsterdam, The Netherlands);
  • “Outstanding Contribution in Reviewing” awarded January 2015 by the Editors of Applied Energy (Elsevier, Amsterdam, The Netherlands).
  • “Outstanding Contribution in Reviewing” awarded February 2017 by the Editors of Applied Energy (Elsevier, Amsterdam, The Netherlands);
  • “Outstanding Contribution in Reviewing” awarded April 2018 by the Editors of Energy Conversion and Management (Elsevier, Amsterdam, The Netherlands).

The recognition of “Outstanding Contribution in Reviewing” awards reviewers who are within the top 10th percentile of reviewers for the Journal, in terms of the number of manuscript reviews completed in the last two years.

As the Italian delegate, he contributed to the development of the ISO 21789 standard (“Gas turbine applications - Safety”).

He is the promoter and a member of the Faculty Steering Committee for the Double Degree Agreement between the University of Ferrara and the School of Engineering of Cranfield University (UK).

Furthermore, for five years, he was the President of CUR Consorzio Università di Rovigo (University Consortium of Rovigo). CUR’s mission is to manage the Degree Courses offered by the University of Ferrara and the University of Padova in the Rovigo Campus.

He is also an external expert appointed by GSE (Gestore Servizi Energetici), the state-owned company (in fact, the sole shareholder of GSE is the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance) which promotes and supports renewable energy sources in Italy.

Finally, he is involved in national research projects and in research collaborations with some Italian companies, mainly in the energy sector (among others, ENEL, ENI, CESI), and also with international companies which are world leaders in the field of power generation (Alstom, General Electric, Siemens).
