The scientific activity of L.A. has dealt with issues of developmental biology and cell biology. Main topics concern: a) developmental and comparative immunology in teleosts and
birds, b) comparative cytology and cytochemistry of
adrenals in teleosts, c) anatomy, physio-pharmacology and development of primary sensory neurons in mammals.
Research on the immune system of teleosts has given significant contribution to knowledge on cytology and differentiation of lymphocyte subpopulations, and development and organization of lymphoid organs. The production and characterization of monoclonal
antibodies against T-cells (first available in a teleost) and IgM-producing cells boosted this research, that required a multi-disciplinary approach and the use of many different techniques (immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, immuno-electron microscopy, in situ hybridization, confocal microscopy, quantitative image analysis, in situ end-labelling of fragmented DNA, RT-PCR, cell sorting, electrophoresis, immunoblotting, ELISA) to be accomplished.
L.A. is co-author of more than 75 publications in extenso in international scientific journals, quoted more than 1200 times (ISI source), member of numerous scientific societies and, since 1997, Founding Member of the Italian Society of Developmental and Comparative Immunology.
