his scientific interests develop along two main research lines: the first is focused on the study of theories of architectural design, drawing from the legacy of the masters of the modernist movement; the second focuses on transformation and redevelopment processes of the contemporary city, with particular attention to historical urban contexts. in his scientific work, he has explored the legacy of modern architecture in various monographs dedicated to works of both Italian and foreign masters. he is the author of articles and essays on contemporary architecture and urban planning, published in national and international scientific journals.

he graduated in 1986 in architecture from the faculty of architecture at the university of naples "federico II". in 1992, he completed his phd in architectural composition at the university of rome "la sapienza," and the following year became a university researcher at the institute of architecture at the university of ferrara, where he still teaches. in 1996, he obtained the title of doktor der technischen wissenschaften from the technical university of vienna. between 2000 and 2004, he participated in various teaching and scientific activities at the technical university of graz, as a guest professor and member of several committees. in 2002, he obtained the habilitation venia docendi and taught for several years at the institut für baukunst where he is currently listed as a free professor or universitäts-dozent. in 2012 he was awarded a research grant from the german daad. in 2016, he achieved asn national habilitation as a full professor. in 2018-2019, he was shortlisted for the professorship competition in denkmalpflege-baugeschichte at the technical university of graz. from 2004 to 2008, he was the president of the self-assessment group for the architecture program at the university of ferrara, and from 2018 to 2021, he served as the academic coordinator. he is currently a member of the doctoral faculty of the phd program “architecture. theories and design” at the university of rome "la sapienza" and an external member of the phd school in architecture at the technical university of graz.

within the department of architecture at ferrara, he founded the interdisciplinary research group arcdes in 1995. he consistently participates in architectural competitions, in which he has won various awards and mentions. some of his projects have been exhibited in international exhibitions and published in catalogs and specialized journals. he has been the president and a member of architectural design competition juries. he has participated as a responsible partner or senior researcher in several european union research projects with the vienna-based group x-change. as a lecturer in numerous international seminars and workshops, he has specifically organized and directed many editions of the architekturtage steyr in upper austria. he collaborates with several editorial boards of journals as a correspondent, reviewer, or expert. as a visiting professor, he has given lectures and conferences on various topics in architecture and architectural composition at foreign universities.
