Scientific Societies Memberships

Member of the Italian Society of Otorinolaryngology since 1988;
Member of the Italian society of Phoniatric and Speech therapy since 1992 ;
Member of the Italian society of Audiology and Phoniatric since 2019.

Since January 1988 he has collaborated with Prof. G.P.Teatini at the Otolaryngology Institute of the University of Sassari. He was the winner in July 1991 of a position as University researcher at the Institute of Otolaryngology Clinic of the University of Sassari. Since 1/11/03 he has been serving at the University of Ferrara, first as a confirmed researcher, then as associate professor, from 2018 Prof. Stomeo is inserted in the SSD MED 32 ( Audiology and Phoniatrics) .
The scientific production of Prof. Stomeo consists of 96 publications published in national and international journals, as well as of book chapters.
His scientific activity has cultivated all the topics related to otolaryngology: studies concerning experimental surgery on laboratory animals, conducted in collaboration with physiologists, have hypothesized the presence of volume receptors located in the inner ear, and therefore sought their experimental activation, performed with neurosurgical approach, to obtain a variation of the plasma levels of ADH, and consequently of plasma and urinary osmolarity.
The clinical counterpart of these studies is Ménière's disease, whose pathogenesis recognizes a dropsy and therefore also an increase in the pressure of labyrinthine liquids. These studies have attempted to contribute to a better definition of the pathogenesis of this important pathology. Other studies have concerned the treatment of cholesteatomas, experimentally induced on laboratory animals, by photodynamic therapy, in order to ascertain the effects of this method on cells with high mitotic index. Important reflexes of these experiences have occurred in the treatment of some neoplastic lesions of the oral cavity.
He carried out radiological anatomy studies to deepen the notions of normal human anatomy of the paranasal sinuses and of the possible and frequent anatomical variants.
Professor Stomeo in addition to being the local manager of a PAC (complex outpatient course) for OSA disorders, actively collaborates at a national level with qualified research teams in this area ( OSAS syndrome), as evidenced by numerous publications in international journals and by the participation as a teacher and speaker at numerous conferences and courses.
Undoubtedly one of the main research areas is the phoniatric one, as evidenced by several publications and book chapters, as well as chapters of official reports at national and international conferences; the work focused on phonation disorders, on conservative treatment in bilateral vocal cord paralysis , on the treatment of pathologies of glottic plane and of the larynx in general by laser surgery , as well as on neurological pathologies with implications on communication and swallowing.
He then took part in working groups in the audiological field with studies relating to the responsibility of HPV in the determinism of inflammation of the middle ear, on neonatal screening and on the importance of vascular problems in the genesis of sudden hearing loss.
Speaker at various national and international conferences including in particular his participation as speaker in 1989 at the second International Conference on the prevention of childhood deafness held in Mexico City, by Prof. P. Berruecos, and at first International course of functional surgery of the paranasal sinuses held in Alghero in the same year; he was a speaker at the 32nd, 36th and 52 nd congresses of the National Society of Phoniatric and Speech Therapy. He was also a speaker at the 75th and 89th SIO ( Italian ENT society ) congresses. For several years he has participated, always as a speaker, in the international courses of Laryngostroboscopy and fibroendoscopic phonosurgery organized by the Voice center of Cesena. He is also a regular theoretical-practical teacher of Phonosurgery and Speech therapy which are annually held at the Bufalini hospital in Cesena.
