Current clinical activity

He works as Associate Professor of Gastroenterology and Head of the Centre for the Study and Treatment of Alcohol-Related Diseases in the Department of Translational Medicine, University of Ferrara, and as Assistant Medical Director in the Unit of Internal Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, “SS Annunziata” Hospital, Cento (Ferrara), Italy; in August 2015 he achieved the High specialization for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorder for the Units of Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine in the Unit of Internal Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, “SS Annunziata” Hospital, Cento (Ferrara), Italy.

 

Professional and Scientific Career

From 1994 to January 2007 he worked at the “G. Fontana” Centre for the Study and Multidisciplinary Treatment of Alcohol Addiction, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Bologna, and at the Unit for Addiction Treatment, Department of Mental Health in Bologna.

In 1995 he got the degree in Medicine at the University of Bologna.

In 1997 succeeded the award for the study “Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid in the treatment of alcoholism: dosage fractioning utility in non-responder alcoholic patients”.

In 1998 he won the award for the project “Investigation of alcohol-related mortality in Italy”.

In 1999 he got the award for the study “Investigation of alcohol habits in a population of poly-addicted patients”.

In 2000 he resulted worthy for the fellowship regarding the project “Investigation into the use of alcohol at thermal spa”, and during the same year, he achieved the specialization in Gerontology at University of Bologna.

In 2001 he got the diploma in Alcoholism and Alcohol-Related Problems at University of Florence.

From 2002 he is professor in Alcoholism and Alcohol-Related Problems at University of Florence.

In 2004 he reached the Ph.D. in Physiology and Physiopathology at the University of Bologna.

From 2004 to 2008 he was one of the member of the Medical Commission of License Driving in the city of Bologna.

In 2006 he got the post-doc in Medical and Pharmaceutical Science at the University of Bologna.

From 2006 he is a member of the European and International Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism (ESBRA and ISBRA).

From 2006 to 2009 he was designed professor in Alcoholism and Alcohol-Related Problems at the University of Bologna.

From 2012 he is a member of the Italian Society of Alcohol Addiction.

From 2012 he is a member of the Regional Commission for Alcohol and Liver Transplantation.

From 2013 he is professor in Alcoholism and Alcohol-Related Problems at the University of Pisa, and at University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

From 2010 to 2014 he was member of the International Advisory Board - SOTAD (Sodium Oxybate in the Therapy of Alcohol Dependence).

Form 2012 to 2014 he was member of the National Advisory Board of Nalmefene.

From 2012 to 2014 he was elected President of the Emilia Romagna section of the Italian Society on Alcohol.

From 2015 to 2019 he was a member of the Board of the Italian Society on Alcohol

From 2018 he was member of the International Advisory Board for the multi-centers study “Efficacy and safety of Sodium Oxibate in reducing alcohol consumption and maintaining abstinence in alcohol-dependent subjects with high and very high drinking risk level (OXYLIFE Study, Phase IIIB)”

At the beginning of 2019 he become deputy President of the Italian Society on Alcohol (SIA)

 

His fields of research include the diagnosis and the pharmacological treatment of alcohol addiction and the alcohol associated liver disease. He attended as invited speaker in more than 125 Italian Meetings, and in 15 International Meetings. He organized seven meetings in the field of alcohol addiction. He is a member of the Editorial Boards of two international peer-reviewed journals (Alcohol and Alcoholism, Frontiers in Addictive Disorder). He is reviewer for several national and International Journals.

Publications

He published 257 International Articles, and 8 of these were clinical trials with pharmacological compounds (GABA-ergic medications: sodium oxybate and baclofen); he was also co-workers in the draft of 48 chapters for 12 books and 9 mono-graphic publications and numerous abstracts presented during National and International Meetings. As co-investigator, he partecipated to 10 international trials.
