PUBLICATIONS and GRANTS
He is Author of over 100 scientific publications in indexed peer-reviewed international journals [H-index 36; i10-index 75; total citations 3700 (Google Scholar)]
He has received several research grants from International (European Community) and National Agencies (MIUR, Ministero della Salute, FISM), including several PRIN projects (2001 National Coordinator and PI “Role of viral infections in the ethiopathogenesis of human vascular diseases. 2005, PI, Studies on endothelial infections by herpesviruses. 2007, PI Studies on endothelial infections by herpesviruses).

SCIENTIFIC ACHIEVEMENTS
He studied the biology of herpes simplex virus and Papillomavirus oncogenesis. Most of his scientific career has been focused on the molecular biology of human herpesviruses HHV-6, HHV-7 e HHV-8. In particular he is an International recognized expert on the biology, epidemiology and disease association of human herpesvirus 6: he determined the role of the viral gene U94 in viral latency, described the association of HHV-6 with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, contributed to clarify the different disease association of the 2 viral species (HHV-6A and HHV-6B)
Currently he is studying also the innate responses to viral and bacterial infections.
