Short Bio

2005-present. Full professor, Engineering Department, University of Ferrara, Italy.
1998-2004. Associate professor, Engineering Department, University of Ferrara, Italy.
1995-1998. Researcher, Engineering Department, University of Bologna, Italy.
Cesare Stefanelli was born in Bologna in 1965. He obtained both his Master’s Degree and his Ph.D. from the university of Bologna, Italy.

Main Teaching Activities

Prof. Stefanelli teaches the “Operating Systems” class (Sistemi Operativi, 6 CFU), part of the Bachelor’s degree program on Electronic and Computer Science Engineering of the University of Ferrara. He also teaches the “Distributed Systems” (Sistemi Distribuiti, 6 CFU) and “Concurrent Programming” (Programmazione Concorrente, 6 CFU) classes, which are part of the Master’s degree program on Computer Science and Automation Engineering of the University of Ferrara.

Research and Scientific Activity

Cesare Stefanelli’s research activity mainly focuses on software infrastructures (middleware) to support multimedia services for mobile user in scenarios that require the integration of wired and wireless networks according to best-effort models (this concerns scenarios commonly referred to as “wireless Internet” and “mobile ad hoc”). The availability of innovative middleware in these scenarios is essential to simplify both the design and implementation of distributed services that can first be customized during the negotiation phase and then adapted to the dynamic fluctuations determined by the operating conditions during the production phase. During his research activity, Prof. Stefanelli has studied different methodologies and strategies, from solutions based on mobile code and agents to architectural approaches that operates at the transport layer. In both cases, he also designed and developed prototypes of distributed services for a wide spectrum of application domains (with a special attention to Smart City and Tactical Network scenarios), which needed to withstand various degrees of dynamicity and answer to different scalability requirements, producing feedback that had a significative impact on the design of the middleware themselves. Prof. Stefanelli has authored more than 100 publications on international conferences and journals. The full list of publications is available at the following link:

Industry R&D and Technology Transfer Activity

Starting from September 2010, Cesare Stefanelli leads all activities at CenTec (www.centec.it), offices of the MechLav laboratory, part of the technopole of the University of Ferrara, located in Cento, Italy. CenTec was created to answer the demands that the industries of the region have raised in recent years for the availability of skills and resources to perform research and technology transfer. CenTec works on extremely attractive and innovative research projects in the fields of applied mechanical and information engineering, with a special focus on ICT technologies applied to industrial processes and products, which include the remote (local) control of machines and e-maintenance. Some of these projects have led to the registration of several patents, in collaboration with scientists and engineers from Carpigiani and IMA. CenTec currently holds collaborations with the most important companies of the local and regional territory, including the FCA group, Sacmi, Bonfiglioli, Centro Software, Centro Computer, IMA, GIMA, and Carpigiani.
Since 2019 Cesare Stefanelli sit in the Board of Directors of the Bi-Rex Consortium, the industry 4.0 Competence Center that provides strategic and operational support to enterprises willing to digitalize the manufacturing process (www.bi-rex.it).

Industry R&D and Technology Transfer Projects

He participates in the "Smart Manufacturing 2020" project, that ranked first in the “Smart Factory” (Fabbrica Intelligente) sector of the National Technology Cluster. Total funds: €12M.
He coordinates the research team from the University of Ferrara for the smart city project “SORT”, which ranked first in the “Waste Management” area. Total funds: €14M.
He coordinates the research team from the University of Ferrara for the project “GO FOR IT – L’Esperienza Prima della Partenza” (GO FOR IT – Experience Before Departure), project number ARS01_00865, which was funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University, and Research as one of the industry R&D projects in the 12 specialization areas identified by the “Programma Nazionale per la Ricerca 2015-2020” (National Program for the Research 2015-2020). Total funds: €10M.

Prof. Stefanelli is the coordinator of research teams from the University of Ferrara for 4 projects funded by the “Programma Operativo Regionale, POR” (Regional Operational Programme) “Fondo Europeo di Sviluppo Regionale, FESR” (European Regional Development Fund):
• (2016-2018) “GST4Water - Green-Smart Technology per l'utilizzo sostenibile della risorsa idrica negli edifici e in ambito urbano” (GST4Water - Green-Smart Technology for the sustainable use of water resources in buildings and urban environments) POR-FESR 2014-2020;
• (2019-2021) “SmartChain: Sistemi interoperabili ed efficienti per la gestione sicura di filiere industriali” (SmartChain: Interoperable and efficient systems for the secure management of industry production chains) POR-FESR 2014-2020;
• (2019-2021) “SBDIOI40 - Servizi Big Data In e Out per Industria 4.0: da shop-floor a post-vendita” (SBDIOI40 – In and Out Big Data Services for the Industry 4.0: from shop floor to after-sales) POR-FESR 2014-2020;
• (2019/2021) “I4S: Industria 4.0 Sicura” (I4S: Secure Industry 4.0) POR-FESR 2014-2020.

International Scientific Collaborations

Prof. Stefanelli collaborates with the “NOMADS” Research Team, led by Dr. Niranjan Suri, of the Florida Institute for Human & Machine Cognition (IHMC) in Pensacola, FL, USA, on several research areas related to the development of middleware for supporting distributed applications in Internet wireless and mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs).
He collaborates with the Hewlett Packard Research Labs in Palo Alto, CA, USA (Dr. Claudio Bartolini), on business-driven models for Incident Management in the IT sector.
