Curriculum

Alessandra Aprile received the Civil Engineering Degree (with honors) in 1991 at the University of Bologna, Italy. She obtained the Ph.D. in Structural Engineering (with full grades) in 1995 at the University of Bologna. She has been working at the Engineering Department of the University of Ferrara since 1996, where she is currently serving as associate professor. In 2018 she was enabled to the role of full professor of the scientific-disciplinary sector 08/B3 (Structural Engineering). In 2015 she has founded WISEcivil, an incubator of ideas for structural engineering. Since 1991 she has been enrolled in the Register of Engineers of Bologna. Since 2018 she has been enrolled in the Register of Technical Experts of the Court of Bologna. Since 2020 she has been a member of the ASSISI’s association.

She contributed to several national and international research projects, cooperating with the following institutions: EERC University of California at Berkeley CA USA (1993-94); CEAE University of Colorado at Boulder CO USA (1999-2000); Departamento de Engenharia Civil, Universidade do Minho, Guimarães PT (2007-2017); StrucTech, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Barcellona ES (2009-today); Civil Struct & Env. Eng. Dept., Trinity College Dublin (TCD) IE (2013-2018); EESD, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, CH (2014-2019); LMA/CNRS, Université Aix-Marseille FR (2017-today). She has been peer reviewer for several International Journals since 1997. She is currently evaluator of international research proposals for Research Executive Agency (REA, EC) and national research proposals for the University and Research Ministry (MUR, IT). She is a member of the Editorial Board of the Open Access Journal of Steel Structures & Construction by OMICS International (US), International Journal of Earthquake and Impact Engineering by Inderscience Publishers Ltd (CH), Buildings by MDPI (CH) and Frontiers in Built Environment, Earthquake Engineering Section, by Frontiers Media SA (CH).

Her scientific activity mainly concerns earthquake engineering and structural rehabilitation of existing structures. During her career she was involved in the following research topics: earthquake and wind engineering; seismic, environmental and fatigue damage; seismic assessment of existing and historical structures; seismic retrofit with passive control techniques; strengthening of RC and masonry structures with fiber-reinforced composite materials. More recently, she has interested to sustainable retrofit methods and risk analysis at urban scale. Her research activity is documented in more than 90 papers, published in journals and proceedings of international conferences. She’s patent holder for industrial invention: “Dissipative Connection Device”. Patent n.102020000013738 filed on 09/06/2020 at UIBM (IT). She has been in charge of several research agreements with public and private agencies since 2006, and consultant in several existing structures case studies: strategic and/or heritage buildings, including historical heritage (like arch bridges and palaces) and modern heritage (like schools and industrial buildings). During 2012 she coordinated emergency work teams after the Pianura Padana Earthquake. Since 2013, she has been member of Emilia-Romagna Regional Authorities expert boards for post-disaster assessment and reconstruction public funding.

She teaches Earthquake Engineering and Advanced Seismic Design courses of the MSc degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Ferrara. She has held Design of Structures and Structural Engineering courses of the Civil Engineering Degree since 1998 and Structural Robustness lectures of the Fire Safety Engineering Master (SAFEng) of the University of Ferrara since 2014. She has organized several national and international workshops and carried out seminar activities since 2003. She has taught in several professional continuum education courses since 2006. She is member of the Research Doctorates’ College in Engineering Sciences of the University of Ferrara. She has supervised 5 Ph.D thesis, 14 research grants and more than 130 MSc Degree Thesis in the fields of structural and earthquake engineering. She is currently Erasmus Delegate at Engineering Department of University of Ferrara.
