Syllabus

Scientific English TEACHING AIMS- The course of Scientific English will facilitate the reading of medical texts and will allow the student to communicate correctly with doctors and patients. The main knowledge acquired will be divided into: -Grammar exercises generally required for an Intermediate /B1 level; -Lexicon relative to the body, diseases, symptoms, etc.; -Authentic material such as articles on current issues in medicine; -Questionnaires in the field of medicine; -Contents of various clinical files, including commonly used abbreviations; -Study of ADLs and their relevance in clinical practice; -Active Listening as a means of communication with the patient; -The various phases of the nursing plan; -The ability to apply knowledge acquired will result in: -Improved linguistic skills resulting in increased confidence in communication skills, leading to better professional/ patient- relationship; -Specific lexicon, above all, referring to pain, and the ability to elicit information through questions improving the comprehension of the patient’s problem; -Improved grammar and reading skills and the reality to identify key information leading to a better comprehension of articles and consequently, a deeper insight into current issues in the field of medicine; -Improved skills in how to translate questionnaires coming from English- speaking countries to apply in an Italian context; -A good knowledge of the concepts and linguistic forms associated with Active Listening can be used to improve communications with the patient. PRE-REQUISITES .Basic knowledge of English Grammar – Elementary A1 –A2. SYLLABUS - GRAMMAR STRUCTURES -Articles: definite / indefinite / partitive. -Pronouns: personal / object pronouns, interrogative /possessive/reflexive/relative. -Nouns: regular and irregular. -Adjectives. -Prepositions : time / place. -Verbs: present / past / future / conditionals 0/I/II/III -Passive. -Habits in the past - used to / always -Modal verbs -Comparatives- superlatives -Gerunds- Infinitives. Teaching Methods .Active Learning - A student - centered learning model that allows students to experiment with ideas, develop concepts, and integrate concepts into systems. Interactive/ Participative Method emphasis on either the learner, content or teacher, learning, in small team - groups. Methods of Testing .Written Exam .The exam is divided into different sections : a) Grammar section with multiple choice questions. b)Questions on Vocabulary- translation of words seen during the lessons. c)Questions on Articles seen in class. d).Reading comprehension. Duration of the exam 1 hour 30 minutes. TEXTS .Much time will be devoted to the development of reading skills. Reading will be based on texts taken from authentic material such as medical journals, reviews. LEXIC .The readings will be accompanied by a study of specific vocabulary currently used in Medical English. Parts of the body, common diseases, hospital departments vocabulary, clinical files, symptoms , etc. Relations with the patient -(communication skills, questions).
